Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
"As lightning fall" is actually pretty suspensful....or downright annoying, depending on the player.
The feeling that you are (almost) alone in the nebula, filled with EMP Storms, searching a disabled transport that can only be reached trough a maze of naw beacons. And of course, the friendly shivan-infested neighborhood is always nice...

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
I never understood why the far-off Sathanases were just triangles. Is it just because they were so far off that that would be what the player would see if they could see them? Or did Volition just skimp on the models? If so, why?

It allowed [V] to have the flickering red dot effect on the HUD from the Sath Capella fleet without having most players find the floating triangles of doom.

Plus, try putting several Sathanases on one map and having the game run smoothly.

Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.

Didn't they come up as a different ship class, too? The SJd Sathanas?

If :V: didn't change the ship class in the Alt Name field in FRED, then yes they would have. I don't remember that ATM tho.

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
I think the most scariest part of Freespace Universe was the Intro video for Freespace 1. I was like WTFMas#$@$#@%. "oh my god!!! We're dead!!! WE"RE ALL DEAD!!!" *shivans warp in* "AHHHHHHHH!!!!"

"Picking up unknown jump signatures"

*shivan ships emerge and shoot down the crippled fighter*
*dramatic sad music as ship explodes into pieces*

I don't know about you guys but that was the darkest mother F$%@#$ video i've ever seen. They should make an honest movie about freespace. It would be like the wing commander movie only better. And they can make 2 movies already, the great war and freespace 2: gamma Draconis, (some crap like that). WHo knows. Today's technology has really evolved. The trouble is who WOULD be a good director, screen writer etc...

I still find that part funny as hell... Big ship jumping in and viewers attention is focused on it, all the jump-in noice. Then you hear in the background this guy yelling and raving like a lunatic. I know he's supposed to be panicking, but it just sounds so goofy...  :)

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
FS2:  Into The Lion's Den.  First time I played that mission I hit the commit button and I was thinking, "Okay... I'm going into the complete unknown... I should be expecting the unexpected, right?  Hmm... probably LOTS of Shivans... ok, just relax... when I get in, I'll look around, see what's up, then maybe I'll start shooting at--DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!  :eek2:  (Yeah... I utterly failed to react in time, so I went splat and had to restart the mission.)

I was doing that exact same thing, except that when i panicked i smashed down my joystick on accident.

in order:

1. Into the Lion's Den
2. Transcend campaign
3. Sync
4. Pandora's Box

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

lol i guess, but if you just relax and think of yourself in a situation, comparable to paintball, you're running from some dude who has a crazy mofo paintball gun automatic noob cannon and you don't know what happens. mind you paintballs do hurt esepcially when you get peppered with 200 of them all over. anyways, compare that to running the #$@% away from an armada that seemed to vanish (because they are probably harassing him thinking that he can run only to track him to ros 128 - could be the explanation :P - when you diverted all power to engines since sheileding wasn't optional, you chaotically fly to ros 128 and try to warn them, but you're so damn scared that its impossible to go step by step on what happened. even when you first watch that (before you even play FS1) you're like what is he talkign about? Then You don't know where the enemy is, you look around you, frantically running then: "THEY ARE COMING, SEND SNIPERS(who cares?) WOOSH *head shot* lets go back to FS1 *reeezowwww* *subspace portals open everywhere* *wirring shivan engines of death* *shivans fire* *bzow bzow!!!* AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! *terran ship blows up*

*freespace logo*

*has soiled self*

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
Sorry to necro, but I feel this topic could use some new input. Sync and Transcend were terrifying, even the briefings were scary. The scene in BP WiH (you know the one) was also pretty freaky.

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
That is a good rush, but I think that after reading through the first few pages here, I have to agree with one of the earlier (as in years) posters herein that the Marie Celest[sic] mission from Derelict is really quite startling the first time you play it, and after it's over, it has such good character. :)
