I don't think we schedualed a "game" yet, more of a test. The game will be this weekend probably, unless people want it earlier, I'm free all week except Sunday.

watsisname,

run D2X-XL using the parameter -printlog. It should then create a file named d2x.log in the program folder. Post the contents of that file here, or send it to karx11erx at hotmail dot com.

You can also try to delete your player profile and create a new one in D2X-XL, if you can get that far (if you can, the player profile may have been the problem).

Questions:

What exactly is "wiggle ship"?
Multiplayer macros?
Is "Improve UDP/IP networking quality" still buggy or proven effective?
Auto-download work? I set it to 30 seconds.
What is the "Use Default Values" option for?

What is multicast?

Should I still host using "short packets"?

The Server:

D2X-XL 1.6.65 UDP/IP Multiplayer Server
IP: 128.193.242.125
Port: 28342

I guessed on the settings I'm not sure about. I'll leave it up hoping someone can see it. *crosses fingers*

No I couldn't (sorry for double post)

I don't suppose you have any kind of firewall up?

Can anyone else see it?

No firewall. Everything should be the same as when I used to host.  :sigh:

I think it's night where karx is too.  :(

Okay, I used -printlog, and discovered what the problem was.  It seems that one of the files from the D2files RAR archive didn't get unzipped to the correct directory, so I cut and pasted it in and now it appears to be working just fine.
Thanks a bunch for the help! :)

Ulala:  "Wiggle Ship" toggles the up and down movement of the ship when idle, and multiplayer macros are the custom textual taunts that you can send to other players with (I think) F9 through F12 keys.

Ulala,

your questions should all be answered in the D2X-XL manual on www.descent2.de (check the side scrolling menu - once you've found it, the help page has its own menu for easy navigation).

I am currently building a menu help system right into D2X-XL, and have come pretty far already. Once I'm done, most menu options will be explained to you when pressing F1 with the option highlighted, and you will also get some background info if understanding of the option requires it, not just some explanation saying nothing you couldn't figure yourself. :)

Edit: A great part of the help system is finished and available in v1.6.67. Press F1 to have the highlighted menu option explained.

Mars,

I can stay up till 3 in the morning my time (GMT+1 DST). ;)

So, um, any idea why we didn't see Ulala's server?

Re: semi-sub-offitial hlp super happy descent 2 multiplayer action!
No. You can however get v1.6.67 and press Shift+Esc while in the game browser. That will open a console window, and D2X-XL will display what data it receives from what IP addresses there. If Ulala's IP never appears there, they either don't come through to D2X-XL or the data he sends is corrupted. If you see the address, D2X-XL for some reason fails to properly process it (or again, it is corrupted). Depending on what happens, I could build further info messaging into the console output to track the problem down.

Re: semi-sub-offitial hlp super happy descent 2 multiplayer action!
*sigh* Even if I were to go through the help file to find the information I needed, it still wouldn't answer my question of "should I check 'improve UDP/IP networking quality' and 'short packets'". With another version, these bugged things out so I feel cautious when it comes to them. The server is currently down, but I'll put it back up in an hour or so with settings checked that I think should be checked. *shrugs* I'll post IP/version/etc information when I get the server up. I'm hoping CP5670 will be willing to put up a server with the latest version as well, maybe even at the same time as me so we can troubleshoot a lil and make sure I still actually have the ability to host.

Ulala,

highlight the menu options in question and press F1 in D2X-XL.

If you cannot be bothered to even try to read my online manual, don't expect me to write everything down extra for you here again.  :hopping:

Re: semi-sub-offitial hlp super happy descent 2 multiplayer action!
Wow, lots of developments here. I was planning to report all the issues we've been having in the DBB bug report thread, but was quite busy for the last few days. Appreciate you helping out with this.

Where does the d2x.log file get placed? I tried adding -printlog to my d2x.ini but can't find this file anywhere. I am using the data directory system, if that makes any difference.

I think most of the problems with the games being completely invisible are related to the host's firewall port forwarding settings. I have always been able to fix that problem for my own games by messing with those options.

The stability is still an issue for me in the latest version. I am basically getting an instant crash to the desktop and the generic windows error message when I start a multiplayer games in certain maps. Strangely, this only happens with some maps (I get the crash with D2 Counterstrike and the official Dogfight pack, but not your custom Dogfight map). However, even if it doesn't crash right away, it still crashes on both computers whenever someone else tries to join. The older 1.5.121 version we've been using doesn't have these problems. I tried creating a new pilot, but that doesn't help. Also, I haven't run into any problems in singleplayer.

I'm doing some summer courses that started today, but should have time to play again at most times this week. I could put a game tonight, but it's not going to stay up very long with these crashes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy you are here to help.  :) I just figured since you made the changes you might know quick easy answers off the top of your head. No worries though, I'll check the help manual when I have more than a few minutes at a time here, but if it doesn't tell me whether or not something that I know nothing about is "good" to check, expect me to ask here again.  :p

As far as my server goes, I seem to be having similar problems as CP. It first crashed the first time I tried to start a multiplayer game, so I restarted the game and got one going fine. I went to work and when I came back the game had crashed again. I'll try rebooting now and try putting up a server again..

@Ulala: I'm sorry I'm just not seeing it. Try messing with your firewall (you've apparently got some sort of firewall, could it be Windows default?)

@CP: Could you put up a game at 3:00AM (GMT) sharp tonight? Or some schedualed time so we can tell if we can see each other.

We post everything in GMT, and we're in more than 3 time zones, I don't think any of us are in the same timezone.
