A total noob, so apologies if I'm missing something obvious..

Have downloaded this file and extracted to an appropriately named folder, I clicked on the launcher and set the FS2 Open location, then clicked on "Run"... nothing... no errors.. just nothing....

Click on the FS2 Open exe and again.. nothing..

What am I doing wrong?  Do I need to install some element of this or should it run fine from just an extracted set of files??

Did you install Open Al? (Second torrent in Shivans post. )
I had problems since I thought I Had it installed After installation it worked fine. Even after dropping in FSPort3.0.

OK - installed OpenAL and downloaded and put FS Open 367 in root dir.  Repointing Launcher to FS Open 367 seemed to do the trick.

Now my question is why the video's don't run.  When I play them directly in Media player, they work fine and DivX is installed, yet in game I get a static band of purple instead of a movie....

I downloaded the torrent but when i open the Launcher.exe, i get an error message saying " Failed to read flag file." What am i supposed to do to fix this problem?

Freespace Open only runs avi files, not the standard mve's. I don't know if Shivan included said avi's in the download did he?

Here goes a question:

I already have the original Freespace2 game, and the Freespace 1 port (minus cutscenes), and I haven't installed the FS-Open (once I tried, got bugs all over, than I gave it up).

What I want to ask is:

- Do I have to download this whole pack, or is it OK to download just the parts I miss?

- Does this version features the new missions of the Freespace2 - GOTY edition?

- If I DO download the whole, is the process of installing it simpler (I mean, is there just one command I can hit that will install the game and all the mods and ports, or do I still have to download the gme, than each mod and port one by one, allocate the files to their correct folders, etc...?)

- To have the enhanced graphics, do I have to mess with my windows register (as I believe I have read somewhere I should so i could get better textures), or is it just a matter of placing the right files in the right positions?

- Finally, is the graphic advantage really visible? I never actually used any mod but the derelict and FS1_port, and, while I certainly don't want to diminish the great skill of the modders here, I am somewhat skeptical that a really significatn graphic improvement can be achieved with the very same engine...

Looking foward to answers (and I can't wait to play the derelict campaign with full voices, I found it as good as the full freespace2 campain at least)

You can bring it up to speed without having to download the full package.

For the enhanced graphics, you will need FS-Open and the media VPs (3.6.7 Media VPs if you go for official FS-Open 3.6.7 build, or 3.6.8-delta Media VPs if you try a CVS build. Skip mv_adveffects.vp though unless you have a top of the line system. Finally, you might want to get the new version 3.0 of the FS1 Port for the best experience

Should be no need to mess with the registry once you get FS-Open and the media VPs working. And the graphics improvement is amazing, less so of course if you use an old system, but even there the HTL capability of FS-Open should let you get a lot more out of it than retail FS2.

As for the GOTY edition, I don't think they were included in this pack, but you may be able to find what you're missing elsewhere.

A few tips for running FS-Open without too many bugs: Use OpenGL instead of D3D, make sure you have OpenAL installed or you'll get errors, and make sure it's in a directory path that doesn't include spaces if you want to use mod directories. And of course, don't be afraid to ask on the forums, for most problems chances are someone else has encountered them and might have a solution. Good luck

Hmmm... I see that the torrent actually works, but it only has the huge RAR file, with a lot of stuff that, for me, is redundant.

What i want to download is the FS-OPEN and the enhanced graphics (already linked, thanks - BTW, my system is a AMD Athlon 3.2 with 2 Giga o RAM memory and a GeForce 6800 256 MG. Is it enough to handle all system requirements of the best improvements?).

But I also will have to download the Derelict full with voices, the videos for the campaigns (As it is disappointing to see a little text, as I do now, when I was supposed to see the grandiose of a video-feature). Now, where can I find that stuff, specially the videos, for download?

That system should be good enough to run FS-Open with all the bells and whistles, yes. More than good enough, actually.

There are many other places to get all the bits you need to make this; This is just conveniently packed

But I'm still seeding this thing and have been since it was posted (I had to kill the pyhton script and limit it to 8kB/s out because so much was flowing out I couldn't use my connection for anything else!)

The torrent is basically an attempt to make everything easier by giving people a rar file they can simply extract in order to install everything. If you want to do it yourself there's no reason you can't and several good reasons why you might wish to (Not downloading over a gig of stuff you already have is one). There is an installation guide in my FAQ that should hopefully explain all you need to know.

The registry edits are actually to make FS2 Retail look better. FSO has them turned on by default anyway.

Have a look on the celebration of Freespace thread in the Hard Light forum to get an appreciation of just how large the changes are. They are really impressive.

I haven't tried the OpenAL but i got the game to work somehow, though the game freezes sometimes when a ship fires a photon beam. Is this becuase of the video card I have or is this a bug?

Maybe you should get the beam slowdown patch. I believe they developed it for that reason.
