Quote
The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, President: Hiroyuki Yoshikawa) and Keio University (President: Yuichiro Anzai), in collaboration with Burton Inc. (CEO: Hidei Kimura), have succeeded in the experimental fabrication of a device displaying "real 3D images" which consist of dot arrays in space where there is nothing but air.

Cool! They don't look unlike early TV Tests too, except in 3D :) It looks very promising :)

Re: 3D Images Developed In Air
And remember, our current TV images are made of dots, so they only need to follow the same principle. eventually they should be able to put enough dots on one holo-image to duplicate an image.

...the problem, though, it that since we are dealing with light and not matter, none of the dots could be blocked by other dots, and you'd see right through to the other side.

Whoop-dee-doo. They've succeeded in burning the air to make little glowing balls.

This idea is like 50 years old or some ****.

The idea might be old, but till now I haven't seen it actually realised. I thought you of all people would be interested in technological advancements...

Just wait until the porn industry gets their hands on it, then you'll see the tech level skyrocket.

Read the article again. The light dots are small plasma balls.

porn + plasma holography + basic male instincts = ouch

We all know that someone would be stupid enough to try it....

Proper advancement, maybe.

This is basically just to show off. There's no real practical-use advancement.

And I'm pretty sure it'll burn a hole in your hand if you touch one of the balls. Not to mention the power requirements and low resolution mean it's currently good for little more than light shows.

If they can scale it up to do 1000ft-high light sculptures or make it colour, then I might be impressed.

While in practice I agree, you have to admit it's a start...

I'd be inclined to believe that the whole thing is enclosed, the photos are up close but in order to get a high enough concentration of phosphoresing gas into such a small area it would have to be encapsulated.

Or toxic. But then the inside of lightbulbs are toxic, so I don't see why this would stop them.

At the very least, it'll make for some pretty new art.

Considering that they are responsible for the appearance of the video and DVD markets it's not hard to believe that they could push this very quickly.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: 3D Images Developed In Air
People do that now, they just use wires and bulbs instead. The main hospital in Copenhagen (Rigshospitalet, probably better known as Riget) is a culprit of that, in fact; from a distance it looks like they have a nicely kitted out christmas tree on their highest roof during December, but when you get closer you notice the actual tree is missing :p
