The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has just sent word that the rating assigned to Bethesda's and 2K Games' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has been changed from T (Teen 13+) to M (Mature 17+). "The content causing the ESRB to change the rating involves more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating, as well as the presence of a locked-out art file or 'skin' that, if accessed through a third party modification to the PC version of the game, allows the user to play with topless versions of female characters," said the ESRB in a release.

By judging a game modified by third parties, they are opening stupid rating systems.
Anyone here remembers the baby in DEM, right? What would happen to FreeSpace's rating if someone were to use a similar aplication to another "not so innocent" image?

In the end, they are trying to make so that game developers make their games harder to mod.

I always liked the BBFC's (the British film/tv/computer regulators) responce to these things which basicly boiled down to them saying that since its not a part of the retail package, or even an optional extra in the retail package why bother changing the rating?

If it is in the CD, then they are selling explicit materials. it doesn't matter how hard it is to get to it. after all, it takes a certain amount of 3rd party software (an OS) and hardware (a computer) to unlock any of the contents of a game.

That's what I'm thinking.  This sounds like the same thing as the whole Hot Coffee fiasco.  What I really have to ask is, after all the stink over that, why the hell would the developers include that type of "hidden" content in the game to begin with?  They had to know that they were only asking for trouble.

Probably because the artists are grown up adults who don't faint at the sight of a nipple, and it was easier to work with anatomically correct models and maps when figuring out stuff like clothing positions.

And I doubt Bethseda would have had a special nipple spotter to go through acres of art files on the master to catch it in unused files.
