I didn't mean to start all that, sorry.
Jesus Christ, now I feel guilty about you feeling guilty about "starting all that".

I was the one who started it, sorry.

It will pass. Believe me.

Dallas resolved by bomb squad robot armed with explosive charge.

I for one welcome our new remote-controlled overlords.

(Though I do have to ask, considering a police department really shouldn't have access to any designed-to-be-lethal explosives, how did they do it? Did they just get really close to the guy with a door-breaching charge?)

Is there any such thing as a desgined-to-be-NOT-lethal explosive?

I guess a flashbang might count as an explosive.

Door breaching charges, lock punching charges, other specialized use explosives available to police for building entry or safe detonation of bombs...

Sidenote: other things police robots have been used to deliver to barricaded suspects: flashbangs, CS gas, cellphones (so that the police can negotiate), and in one case, a pizza.

Soccer fans are weird.

Re: W-H-I-Y-L - Asante Sana Squash Banana.
Soccer fans are weird.

They really aren't! How many of us watched Battlestar Galactica and couldn't wait for the next episode every week? How many of us are now enjoying watching game of thrones? HOw many of us enjoy playing video games because of the story that they tell? Everybody loves drama.
How many people go to rock concerts every single time? It's not just because of the band playing, it's that sense of community. It's the pure adrenaline you get from being part of a crowd that is rocking on in the middle of the night, jumping around, singing along with the band. It's raw emotion shared amongst a group of people that is larger then can be reasonably considered natural.

Football (and indeed all sports) combine(s) those two, and more: Not only is there drama, but it's happening in realtime! There is community, but also a shared sense of pride and indeed everything is simply bigger then any rock concert can be. There really is nothing weird about going fully wild about that.

It's a much more active, constant, sport than baseball, say. Easier to engage with and stay that way.

It's the most beautiful game. By far.

Constancy is... not its strenght. I mean, basketball is way more constant than football. And yet, I find it way more boring than football (perhaps it's the homogeneous constancy and rythm of it).

Re: W-H-I-Y-L - Asante Sana Squash Banana.
Even as a soccer player, I have a hard time watching it.  I pretty much only ever watch international matches. Your average mid-season low stakes match can get pretty damn boring.  Back when the MLS first started was pretty good too, when almost all the players were actually American nationals and we were playing the game like we had something to prove (which we did).  Now it's like the soccer equivalent of the Canadian/European American football leagues.

I just stand by the basic assertion that any sport which routinely ends in scoreless ties is fundamentally broken and needs fixing.

Broken is this demand for non scorelessness. The number zero was invented and considered heretic a thousand plus years ago too, and it's still math's best invention yet. So are scoreless ties: they define the zero of a game. Without it, all football makes no sense whatsoever.

Scoreless ties are one of the best thing about soccer leagues. The beauty of it is that there are incredibly tense scoreless games, and utterly boring goalfests; the final score of a match tells you nothing about how it went down. Within the grand stories of leagues and tournaments, scoreless games can create very tense moments and surprise results, and that's something that just doesn't happen when every game needs to have a winner and a loser.
