Depends on how Nehalem stacks up in the quad+-core arena. It'll stay a viable option for another few months. Remember the Conroe launch? E6600s overclock decently, and 2GB RAM and a 7900GT or 8800GTS is plenty of graphics power. 975X or later a P965 motherboard, and you have a decent system. Similar thing now--a computer will at least stay relevant for about 2 years. I expect about 2 years out of everything: my E2140 does 3248mhz, and I bought that a year ago, as well as a P35 motherboard and Radeon HD3850. Now, a year later, I'm upgrading to a Q6600 for processor for $150. It could very well become a $100 upgrade alone if my friend buys the E2140 off of me. If not, I have that processor for another LGA775 build, such as a HTPC for my stepfather and mother.

Basically they're already "obsolete"... Yorkfield is out, but not as competitive as I hoped for the lower-end. Wolfdale's got a lot of market share now, but Yorkfield is still a bit behind. The much-hyped Q9450 didn't turn out so well--and is effectively phased out now that the Q9550 is within a few dollars of it. Oh well, really. A Q6600 is plenty of power and the one I'm buying has already hit 3.6GHz for 24/7 load. That's about as much abuse as I'll give it, so no worries.

Yeah--as I said they're already obsolete technically speaking, but for $185 new you still can't beat them. A 9850 BE or some other junk like that at stock, beats it. But if you want to overclock (and no Phenom goes above appx 3GHz on air) you're sunk. I want to bring my Q6600 to 3.6GHz or more, so I'll be trying for that.

Anyways--I consider a Q6600 a worthwhile investment... $100-150 and plenty for the next year.

IMHO the problem with buying top of the line computers isn't the fact that they go obsolete quickly, it's the fact that people associate "obsolete" with "not being able to run the most recent game with graphics turned up 14 points above highest".

I use it more for apps though to be honest. As long as my old favourites run i don't mind

Meh. I'd still be using my 7600gt athlon 64 single core 1.5gb memory and 480gb storage still. It's a very decent computer even though it's a single core. It runs games great. But, i wanted a laptop. The laptop was pretty much a downgrade though. I have a 120gb hdd (which is fine, i actually use that capacity), an 8400gs (which is pretty ****ing great for a 600$ laptop but in no means a 7600gt performer), and a 1.4ghz core 2 duo, and 2gb of ram. The laptop actually is an upgrade considering the better processor, and system memory. While my new 8400gs is like meh it'll do what i want it for at good performance, but not as good as i once had. I actually don't care about the hdd so much. I had 480gb a while ago, and i just never use that much capacity. I still don't use that much capacity on this 120gb hdd. But, the laptop is a lot smaller!!!

I sold my last system for 600$ with windows vista home basic i tossed into the deal that came with my laptop that i wasn't going to use. Pretty much my last computer was a solid and proven gamer being equipped with a dvd burner and lots of storage. I tossed in vista home basic when i got it, and he's like "i want it!" I was nice enough to show him how to use the machine, and included quake 2 and all the expansions for it, openarena, and quake 4. Of course, it came with an optical mouse, sturdy keyboard, speakers, and a 19inch crt capable of doing 120hz at high resolutions (the monitor coming with the death of a lot of desk real estate, but it's a nice monitor).

I'm an overclocking enthusiast, so I really don't mind much spending to keep pace. Basically I planned to upgrade to a quad or a Wolfdale. An E7200 would have been cheaper, as would an E5300, but a Q6600 is better performance overall and a major upgrade really. My graphics card is just a Radeon HD 3850, so I'm fine in that department. Major reason for buying a Q6600 is to run World Community Grid.

Finidng a job as an unemployed just-out-of-school-with-a-unnecesary-qualification sucks... (i have finished a sortof arts high school. my official qualification is "Textile - chemical technician". Here's the twist, all the factories and labs are either closed or in the process of closing....)
