I honestly don't think long threads would have an effect on forum stability/speed, it's only loading one page at a time, right? And besides, I've seen forums with 500 page threads.

It could; RPG.net locks threads on Page 99 because 100 pages cause a noticible jump in server use.

i was under the impression that it was hard on the server to keep long threads open. by breaking them up into sections you can also archive the old parts of the thread that people are less intrested in.
