The problem is that almost all of them have nigh-infinite numbers of things causing them to load. Essentially, without knowing every single application, dll, and service and every revision of every application, dl, or service there is no feasible way to know what specific thing causes these particular instances to load.

Isn't there some sort of back-end system logging that would keep a record saying, "Okay, process X made a call for process Y to load at 9:03 AM"?  Not that I'd ever want to bother with looking it up, but I'd figure that there's some way to keep track of what's actually requesting what.

Yes, there are utilities that can show you what called what.  Process Explorer (and the rest of the sysinternals suite) is a good place to start.

Dead drive  The whole computer just hung itself while playing a game; a quick push-button later, and it no longer shows itself on POST. There's no horrible clicking noises that suggest head stack or platter mayhem, so I think something electrical just died (I hope), since the whole drive's been cold and silent since death. And I have no idea how to revive it, this is out of my league.

It's still under warranty, but the problem is the data. Don't feel easy with RMA or data recovery services, but the only other option is shipping things back and forth and playing with the PCB and the drive's own flash ROM. And that has its own implications / danger / cost.

I think you're on to something there. This situation has caused him a lot of pain. So go into it with a mindset not expecting it, and trying not to think about it, so any pain will be minimised. And if it does happen, great!

a hard drive glitch would still result in a post beep (and an error message). you could try disconnecting the hard drive and see if the bios posts and gives you an error. ive also noticed that sata controllers seem to be rather finicky. i got a hard drive that needs to have its sata cable wiggled periodically for no aparent reason. maybe hook it up to another machine and see if you can read the contents.

I've also had luck just trying a different SATA port on my machine to access a drive I thought was dead.  Just be careful if you have multiple drives; for some reason this made it read my data drive e: as d:, and windows start deleting what it thought was "orphan files" upon restart.  I lost most of my music (mostly ripped from CDs I have in storage) and a few photos that were baked up at adrive.com.

relationships are a horrible way to fix crazy. you either end up with someone just as bad off as you are, or they dump you because you are not normal. either way you get drama and that tends to make your cheese slide further off your cracker. your best bet is to hang out with sex addicts and dont expect anything more than a polished knob.
