Obsession is not always unhealthy, it's a continuing preoccupation of the mind. Obsession with a goal like training for a sporting event such as a marathon. Obsession with mastering an art form such as a musical instrument or a particular creative medium. Obsession with...  Freespace

It's unhealthy if you let it rule you.

As for how they go together, it's rather a simple equation

You're pining over a gal. The intermediary between you and the gal is contactable only through Facebook. Facebook goes down, you lose that middle man. Lose the middle man, lose your ability to proceed with your scheming

For normal instances, if Facebook goes down I'd like to believe that people don't get sad or start to freak out or make a post about it
For abnormal instances, the opposite happens

So there's my logic/reasoning/rationale for associating the two


As for what you're on about Luis, yes, love is an obsession. However, there is healthy and unhealthy love cycles. Healthy being, you've been with someone for however long it takes, being intimate not necessarily physically but primarily mentally. It's about the connection. Unhealthy being, you know very little about the person aside from there name and you find yourself infatuated to points of stalking and murals with candles (not saying you're at that point Aardwolf, just making the example as clear as possible)

The other thing I'd like to just say is there's a difference in loving someone, and being in love with someone.

Loving someone usually means you have a connection with that person. Being in love generally means you're invested in that person

And as a sidenote: I don't recall Aard ever saying he was in love with that person...
Either I missed something, or he never explicitly said it

im gonna have to agree with luis on this one. our society has gone out of its way to make it seem as if a relationship is supposed to be a thing that is either perfect or is going to end up in a two way mutual rape-torture-murder after decades of spousal abuse. while in fact most of them are in the gray area somewhere in the middle. my relationships may have been closer to involuntary mutual chainsaw masturbation than the norm, but i still was enriched by them and felt dead inside when the were over. as self destructive as they were for all parties involved, i like to think that they were worth the trouble, and i would also like to think the feeling is mutual (sans logging equipment or felonies of course).

i think thats one thing europeans have a leg up on americans or perhaps to a lesser degree brits (its hard to say who's culture is more repressed). they seem more accepting of love, and less about relentless fear mongering about all the horrible consequences of said love. you have a much greater chance of finding love than have a horrible experience with a dominatrix with a weedwacker while chained to a stump in the woods.

To move from the P1 to P2 license in Queensland (the driver's licenses in Australia go in a sequence of Learners, Provisional 1, Provisional 2 and then Opens) you have to take an online hazard* perception test - you can do it as many times as you need to before you pass, but only once per day. I attempted it tonight for the first time and didn't get it, because my average response time was longer than the required average of seven seconds...

...by .02 of a second.



The feedback did say that I could have missed some hazards; it was a bit vague, so I won't know whether I did miss something unless I try it again and get the required average time but still fail.

*Just in case that response time seems a little long - it's just stuff like identifying that you need to slow down because someone's slowing down in front of you, or doing a u-turn, or pulling out, etc. Not something like a dog darting in front of you, as far as I know. Although to be honest I thought I did pretty well at identifying hazards before I needed to act, so the person who made the test must be really good at picking up clues... or I'm actually rubbish.

It's certianly not uncommon to get tests like those wrong the first time. If you are only by .02 of a second behind, you might juts be rather good.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't simply pass the test on his next attempt when he was so close. After all, when you try anything new the first time, you usually do significantly better the second time.

On the subject of obsessions, I definitely do not default to obsessions being a bad thing. Obsessions can propel people to greatness and happiness. Obsessions drive the human race forward. They're a double edged sword, but without them, so much greatness would not have been achieved.
