I wanted to continue in academia, but that kind of fell apart...and then I wound up working for academia, which has almost made me fall apart on numerous occasions. Fun!

I'm in grad school and I need to make a satanic bargain to pass this exam and I'm like HAIL SATAN but no one answers so I try my biggest HAAAAAIL SATAN \m/ and there's nothing coming back to me from the infernal plane and that's when I realize that even hell has hell

I too have an exam tomorrow, though of a different animal. Mine is a low-level qualification exam at work. The smallest, easiest exam we have that still actually matters in some respect.

I take that back. Radcon isn't smaller, but it's way easier. But seriously, **** Radcon. Not counting it. I hate those idiots.

In my opinion, that may just be because they're tired of being a student, not tired of their subject per se.

PhD's generally take, what, three or four extra years of university beyond the Bachelor's degree? By that point, anyone would be tired of dealing with university bull****.

I dunno, most of the PhDs I know have finished their doctorate within 3 or 4 years. It probably varies with the academic culture from place to place (and field to field); I suspect the ratrace for tenure varies less.

Yeah it really depends what field you're in. I was at a top 10 research school for 'social neuro' so the knives were out and there wasn't a lot of money to go around.
