When you Just can't help yourself....
That game. The one you hate. You hate so much but just have to play. You know the one.
Mine, Metroid Prime 2. Just about every moment did my head-in. EVery boss. Every stupid jump bit. Every stupid "puzzle". Just finished it after a 4yr, on-off, hate-hate relationship.
But I beat it. Now it can go back in the cupboard and I can pretend it doesn't exist.

Re: When you Just can't help yourself....
Aww... I liked MP2...  :(

Yeah, well, anyway: I don't really have games like that. Unless you count some shmups. Those games can get frustratingly hard, especially when you spend several hours working your way up to Stage 7 in R-Type and then get stuck at a completely unfair checkpoint with no items doomed to get killed in the next room no matter what you do because there are too many enemies for you to kill unless you have powerups whichaspreviouslymentionedyoucan'tgetbecauseofspawningatthecheckpointafkdsjfa;kldsfjlskdaaaaAAAAAAAARGH! :mad2:

Yeah, that was not a fun attempt at beating R-Type...

Final Fantasy Tactics. Yes, the game was fun as all Hell. But after getting to level 70 and still being stuck on that one damned mid-late boss (the one before the mission where you see your first enemy ninja), I always got annoyed and put the game away. I started a new game and finished it off earlier this year, though.

Such a sweet little thing, then you get to know her and turns out she's infested, drunk, and exceptionally abusive.  I always come back thinking "I'll finish a campaign this time."  Come late 1944 (seems to be my record) I go away crying and file for another divorce.  Worst simulator games ever.

I wanna be the guy

Quite probably the most difficult game ever... I can't imagine how it could be more difficult. Still, now and then I'll try to beat it just for the bragging rights. If only I could pass the first 3 screens...
"Closing the Box" - a campaign in the making :nervous:

Re: When you Just can't help yourself....
Heard about I Wanna Be The Guy, watched a play-through on Youtube a while back. Pretty hilarious in just how unfairly hard it is. Need to play it one of these days.

People who don't know that game: EVERYTHING kills you... that which doesn't, will try to later. And it will do so in impossible ways. Whether it be the apples that fall up, the moon that crushes you without warning, the error message that falls on your head, or the save point that attempts to eat you... winning IWBTG is one hell of an accomplishment.

Donkey Kong 64.

You don't know what it's like until you've tried. After many months and with help from three other friends, we finally got 101% completion. Collected every single god damned banana, coin, blueprint, fairy, arena crown, golden banana, boss key, the Rare and Nintendo coins, beat every minigame and every boss, all for every character and every level.

101%.

I then shelved the game and never played it again.

They should've made it a battleship simulator instead. For the brief amount of time that one battleship modification worked without destroying all my save game files, it was pretty darn funny vaporizing entire merchant ships with my 11" guns. Wish the Iowa mod worked.

Ah well.

And yeah, Donkey Kong was silly. Fortunately I never owned a 64, so I was only presented with that torturous games when I went over to a  friend's house.

Space Junkie, an old Mac space invaders clone, was like this for me at one point. I finally beat it last year after 15 years of playing it, although not that frequently.

Another tough game I occasionally fire up is Skyroads Xmas Edition, which I've never managed to complete. I beat the original Skyroads a long time ago, but the Xmas levels are a lot harder.

Re: When you Just can't help yourself....
Baldur's Gate II. Following the advice of several members of this forum I decided to give it another try on the grounds that it supposedly got better and after ploughing my way all the way through the Underdark I can conclusively state it does not. In fact it gets worse.

Unfortunately now I'm interested enough in the whole Bhaalspawn story that at some point I'm going to have to put my rubber boots and trousers back on and plough through the rest of this **** to find out how it ends. At which point it will go back on the shelf and never be touched again like the piece of railroading crap it is.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.

I never finished Heretic, well... maybe no one remembers that one :P

I had Hexen Beyond Heretic ;) game was awesome. Featuring such awesome weapons as a throwable warhammer and items like the porkulator.  I miss first person melee games.

I guess i had a hate relationship with Dark Forces.  Not because the game was bad, i liked it a lot, but because my game was corrupt and wouldn't save.  In effect every time i played it i needed to start from the beginning.  Needless to say that was frustrating, i think the farthest i ever got was fighting Boba Fett on Courscant :P
