Paintball is too expensive. Me and my friends took old spring and air pump bb guns and had the great qtip wars (we shoved qtips down the barrels with no bb's of course). They hurt alright, and the qtips are re-usable.
Now today i'm amassing all the cheapie airsoft guns i can find. I love the spring powered variants (there's plenty of them out there that have great bb speed and range). What's even better is that the nicer spring loaded guns are getting cheaper (i just have the sub $20 ones). So far i bought a cybershot colt 1911 and mossberg m590 and a daisy as240 (the daisy is really high quality compared to the cybershots for the same price, and it's not chinese). Then i got some wierd ass off brand $5 dollar pistol for free i stretched the spring in to at least make it decent, and then a pretty cool sig 552 that i had to adapt the m16 clip for for free (m16 is in the garbage). Because as soon as my friends found out i was into airsoft, they're giving me their airsoft guns because they don't play anymore. I wouldn't get rid of them, they're pretty cool toy replicas in the least (3 guns free, m16 in the garbage since only the clip and rubberband was good for clipless sig552).
I originally had them for sniping the neighbors **** dogs off the property where i live, but i guess i'll host an airsoft war or two with my unintentional arsenal. Sorry if i talked too much about airsoft, alternatives to paint ball because of finances and the assholes who lie about having their guns on max velocity are a must. Hit by your normal paintball in a match stings and leaves a welt. Someone who shot you in the right ass cheek in the same match that leaves a welt and makes your leg numb for 3 hours would've had it coming for them if it didn't make me unable to walk for a bit.
