Any semi-competent player can easily avoid a creaer and stip it from blowing up..by killing it or outruning it.
Unless they sneak up on you, as happened to me multiple times.  :P

Nerfing creepers is probably one of the most common plugins I see on bukkit servers.  I know one person who swears by creeperheal.  Explosions will destroy blocks, but the plugin will rebuild what is destroyed X amount of time later as set by the plugin config.

My server, I nerf explosions, but only on the creative world.  Survival, it's basically a recreation of single player survival, just with multiple people.  If someone is going to play with TNT, lava, flint and steel, or try to play tag with a creeper, go for it, just be prepared to accept any consequences.   :D

POSIX is fine, as is Rev or RP

"Although generally it is considered a no no to disagree with a mod since it's pretty much equivalent to kicking an unpaid janitor in the nuts while he's busy cleaning up somebody elses vomit and then telling them how bad they are at cleaning it up cause you can smell it down the hall." - Dennis, Home Improvement Moderator @ DSL Reports

"wow, some people are thick and clearly can't think for themselves - the solution is to remove warning labels from poisons."

Why do both the servers disable creeper explosion damage? They're one of the funnest enemies in single player I find.

Imagine all the hours put into most of the things on both servers, the Fenris being a prime example.

Now imagine a Creeper spawing inside it somewhere, and someone bumping into it.

"Wow, that ssssssssssubspace drive is pretty nice."

Yeah, then you have to patch up 14 blocks or so. No big deal :)

[simon]"That's a very nice fenris you have there" [/simon]

Then you'd have to replace another 14, then another... then the lava flowing damage, then the water damage, then some more creeper explosions
It adds up, and will eventually get annoying having to replace blocks everytime someone not in creative goes to visit it.

Or you could just not have any, and not have to worry about it. Explosions still hurt on both servers, just without the annoying hole creation

Well just light up the areas that are developed, and block off the areas that aren't. Creepers survive in sunlight but they spawn in normal mob conditions so far as I know.
Just seems a bit like cheating to me, much like creative, as I always play survival. I just wish my yogbox was less laggy and would work for more than a half hour before spazzing out with the graphics. Probably just need a better comp.

Creepers don't just destroy your own walls...they could also potentially take out complicated redstone wiring, or a building created by someone who isn't on the server anymore.  Letting them do their thing in a place where people are trying to build seriously is just asking for it.

Tell ya what. You make somehting as large, good, and complex as the Fenris, then see how you feel about a creeper that can damage blocks being within even 200 meters of it.

Until you've made anything truly amazing, you have no basis to judge on. And no offence, but if you only play in survival, then odds are way against you building anything close to the level I'm talking about.

Besides that, you can easily keep creeper levels down by default in SP just by making sure to sleep at night.  We don't have that luxury on an MP server, unless there's a mod out there that triggers infinite daytime.

And yeah, the odds are against a person building anything close to the level of a Fenris because a person has to MINE EVERY BLOCK. Building something is a lot less challenging when the building materials can be conjured out of thin air. Try building that Deimos in survival. Except make dozens of tools, mine every cobblestone block, then mine coal, then smelt all the cobblestone into stone, then craft all the stone into stone bricks, then manually place the stone bricks without falling to your death. And while you're doing this, in the meantime keep yourself fed, fight off monsters, walk to and from your constrution site to your smelting/mining site, etcetera.

I hate creepers destroying my hard work thank you, even if it's just a simple structure, the act my hard work has been damaged or destroyed is just

You also forget that creepers walk around and can go pretty much any place a player can go.  nar keep the block destruction turned off, you want block destruction, find a server that keeps it or play single player

That's a common issue to be had when talking to Kyad.

Anyway! The Fenris is looking fantastic. I'd get on more and help detail the hull, but damn I've been busy as of late.

This was our first attempt at the fenris. It was made in Minecraft Beta 1.3_1. It was made in survival mode with zero assistance of any kind primarily by sara, funtapaz, trashman, myself and sandwiched. We had to mine and smelt every block. I would be equally as protective of this one as the new one.

Yeah and so is this picture here to help justify you being a dick head? Does spending a lot of time in a video game entitle you to talk down to other people?

It may surprise you but some people enjoy games with adversity where a creeper can blow up your hard work and you need to repair it, or your thaumcraft factory starts polluting your world and turning it purple.

That's cool bro. Some of us enjoy a game where we can have fun and not grind all the time. To each their own.

What do unexpected and random events have to do with grinding? They're the very opposite of grinding as point of fact.

grinding = spending 10,000,000 hours collecting enough resources to build things
unexpected and random events = getting killed, having your progress reversed

yeah no thanks I don't want to play that game.

Nope. It isn't the same thing over and over. Things you build (hopefully) have enough design in them that you can avoid doing the same thing for more then 15 mins or so. Also, when you're done, its over, unless you screwed up you dont have to do that part again ever.

And no. My example was to show you the kinds of things we are defending by turning off creepers, even for survival play. Its not some junky but functional cave, it's a large project we spend quite a long time on. Most of the builds on the server are this way, although maybe not to this scale.

All you're doing is placing blocks, this by definition is the same thing. You decide the wall of a ship is going to be 30 high by 100 long, you spend X minutes placing 3000 blocks. You decide your hull should be double-wide. You place another 3000 blocks.

Minecraft as a "game" consists mainly of three things:
1. Mining
2. Crafting
3. Building

With the underlying elements of exploration/adventuring and creativitiy. Even if you're doing all three of those things for one express purpose, you are still doing three different things. Which is further broken up by for example exploring a cavern during mining, or building a subterranean base hub for crafting, etcetera.

If you remove 2 of those elements and focus only on the building you are by default grinding more.
