HLP OS and Hardware Survey
I would appreciate if you could participate in this poll to survey what kind of OS and hardware the fine people here have in their gaming PC. As a rule of thumb in this poll, you have three votes. One for OS, one for CPU and one for GPU.

If you do not know what options to pick, here's a quick rundown how to get the information.

OS
In Windows, from Start-menu open Run and type "msinfo32", then click OK. Therein you will find OS name and system type that tells you what OS you are running and whether it is 32- or 64-bit.

Linux and Mac OS X are found at bottom of the poll (sorry, I forgot about them). If you're using OS X, please let us know which OS X you are using.

CPU
Please do NOT select all options that your CPU supports. Select only the newest instruction set your CPU supports. For example, if your CPU supports SSE3, select only SSE3 and ignore SSE2 and SSE. Likewise if your CPU supports AVX, select only it and ignore all SSE options.

Easiest way to check which instructions your CPU supports is to grab and run CPU-Z. Once you have the program open, you will find supported SSE or AVX extensions in the "Instructions" field.

(Other instructions like SSSE3 and SSE4 were left out from the poll on purpose)

GPU
Just like in CPU part, select only the newest DirectX your GPU supports. For example, if your GPU supports DirectX 11, select only it and ignore the rest.

Easiest way to check DirectX support of your GPU is to grab and run GPU-Z. Once you have the program open, you will find latest supported DirectX in "DirectX Support" field.

Thank you for your participation!

If you made a mistake in your votes, you can remove your vote and vote again.

Re: HLP OS and Hardware Survey
I've edited it to add Linux and MacOS options, as well as provide equivalent OpenGL support.

Re: HLP OS and Hardware Survey
Good idea The E. I considered extending OS X list to include multiple releases, but decided against it. Instead, it'd be nice if OS X users would tell us which version they're running. There are apparently huge differences in OpenGL support between the releases.

Re: HLP OS and Hardware Survey
Where's SSE4? It's kind of a big jump from SSE3 to AVX.

Re: HLP OS and Hardware Survey
Intel and AMD have mostly incompatible "SSE4 level" instruction sets in their CPU's, up until AVX comes along at which point using SSE4 is pointless. So it's either SSE3 or AVX if you want to rely on single instruction set getting the job done.

Re: HLP OS and Hardware Survey
Then why not use SSSE3?

Because it doesn't offer relevant capabilities.

Re: HLP OS and Hardware Survey
And because the only AMD arch that doesn't support AVX but supports SSSE3 is Bobcat...

Edit:I'm fairly sure I made it a point to allow users to change their votes, but it seems like this isn't allowed. I wonder if a moderator can edit the poll to allow vote changes because I can't.

Thank you. :)

Edit: Maybe this could be highlighted if anyone would be willing? Google image search brings up some decent images that can be used for a highlight when you search for "survey".

64 bit Linux (well, dual-boot, but I haven't booted Win7 in at least a month).
SSE3
OpenGL 4.2 (But I think Mesa only uses OpenGL ~2.0)

The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

That statement is false.
Some old soft only runs on win98. That said, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that no one uses win98 on a gaming rig anymore.

Mac OS 10.6

Will be getting a new haswell machine before the year is out which should bump me up to OpenGL 3 (or 4 if 10.9 is out by then) and AVX.

OS: Win7, 64-bit
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti, 2048MB
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.3GHz (AVX-capable)
RAM: 8GB DDR3

I do also keep a WinXP netbook around for travels and some vintage games, but it's a less-than-ideal solution for a good number of cases. Will consider alternate setups in time.

Ed: I underestimated my core's instruction set.

CPU: i7 3770k
GPU: geforce 560
