Which won, the Solaris or the Raynor?

IMHO the Diaspora sun skybox looks awesomer... but it probably hasn't got the "Sol" starfield. Also it hasn't been released yet, so ... bleh.

I don't disagree, but HerraTohtori went for realism.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Solaris won, but then I armed my entire squadron with Paveways and went straight for the beamz. I didn't put much thought into strategy or logistics, so the enemy squadron was just two strike bomber wings disarming turrets, a large bomber wing armed with Helios bombs, and two fighter wings for cover. (I dunno how large, canonically, squadrons are, but I've always gone for five wings.)

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
I think FS squadrons are equivalent to real-life squadrons (about 12 fighters?)... but what FS calls a "wing" is really a "flight", whereas a real-life "wing" is larger than a squadron... I think.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Yeah, the Solaris will crush just about anything... so long as it's in range of those rapid-fire rail guns.  Those things kill turrets like you wouldn't believe, and most ships will be defenseless before they can do much damage.  I believe the magic number is 4,000 meters.  Any turrets inside that are dead, but beyond that, the Solaris can only engage with Apocalypse torpedoes, which just can't keep up with beams.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Indeed. Also bear in mind that those turrets generally get armor of some variety (no frontline GTVA ship would go into battle with simply the tabled HP on those subsystems this far into the war).

Also bear in mind that the UEF is moar awsum than the GTVA.

Download for the mission in question... keep in mind that this is like, an hour of work with little actual thought put into it 'cause I was bored a while ago.

Has anyone tried a Titan front-on attack against the Solaris?

Try Serkr vs. the Solaris. Weep at the might of the shock jump.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
One more pic from that mission. May get one of the fight later.

[EDIT] Some more shots. Solaris ftw.

The Raynor looming in the distance.

The Solaris lets loose some missile barrages.

The fighter squadrons are in a melee around the Raynor.

The Raynor and Solaris exchange shots.

The Raynor is down!

Cleaning up the last GTVA fighter.

The fighter explodes in a 3.6.12 fireball.

What bloom value is used in those screenshots? It looks pretty decent.

It looks decent since there's no bloom. :P I like my antialiasing, so no postprocessing for me.

Hear, hear! We do need more of those. I try to make effects like it using Lightspeed's nebulae but I usually fail.

Nah, it's another Leviathan that unfortunately has a grim fate.
