Re: A celebration of Freespace
So yeah, I was fully expecting that firing on a whole 500k-poly mesh while on a debug build would simply melt FSO, turns out it just shrugged it off and kept solid 60fps like it was nothing. And it'll go even better once I put collision meshes on everything.

So you can stop dreaming about supercomputers. FSO's pretty cool guy, eat polygons for breakfast and doesn't afraid of anything.
i remember a time when this melted FSO when fired upon... and that was only 40k polies.

Full page with only one image? Well... It's awkward a bit.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I was bored tonight so I made some buildings and a new planetary skybox. The buildings really look like crap from close up... if I'm not going to UVMap them I need to at least give them some halfway-decent tilemaps instead of ripping them from the MediaVPs.

(also I'm designing a race around that landscape model and I'm totally not ripping off JAD:XA (or Kentauroi Race))

(also lens flaaaaaaare)

Very beautiful. Would it be too much to ask for you to post another one without the HUD please?

[12:17] <battuta> ShivanHunter|zzz that skybox is amaaaazing
[12:17] <battuta> how'd you keep the terrain mesh looking that good up close?
[12:18] <ShivanHunter|zzz> tilemaps
[12:18] * ShivanHunter|zzz is now known as ShivanHunter
[12:18] <ShivanHunter> I made the mesh by creating a bigass square grid and tilmapping it, then deforming it by grabbing chunks and moving them aroundto create those rocky overhangs
[12:19] <battuta> gortcha
[12:19] <ShivanHunter> of course creating a few craters too, more carefully
[12:19] <battuta> maybe you can fix the moon

Amazing.

(I think everybody should have a separate thread, with 25 obligatory "you're so amazing" posts after each screen/mission/model/code change they submit, to do their work justice)

Re: A celebration of Freespace
The texture stretching and contrast problems in this shot bring it down but I'll post it here because the choreography was a bear and I think the black/whites and lines are striking.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I think the pitch-black fighters against a fairly well lit landscape looks awkward. It really, really bothers me.
[22:29] <sigtau> Hello, #hard-light?  I'm trying to tell a girl she looks really good for someone who doesn't exercise.  How do I word that non-offensively?

Re: A celebration of Freespace
It's a consequence of the lighting - you either get the sunlit side or you get to capture the Earth above them. I really like the contrast and the choreography was super annoying (too annoying to bother resetting when I came back with different lighting settings) so I kept it.

They're actually pretty well lit from the other side.

Stupid lack of diffuse lighting.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
It's not necessarily that, just that the sun is RIGHT behind those fighters (probably just above the image (look at the angle on the earth)). In any case, I really like the harsh lighting for various BP-related thematic reasons. That image is very, very WiH, IMO.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Yeah, I thought the stark contrasts, aggressively paired diagonals on the Kent wings and horizon line, and the intimacy of the two pilots as patches of light in the space between their practically full-dark war machines all worked super well. I wish I could do something about the moon texture but c'est la vie.

Yeah same.
Also because of the two red glowpoints and the thrusters that dont illuminate the ships at all. It's just all too black, like they are black holes sucking up ALL the light.

Shivan Hunter, can you write a post on how you pulled that one off in detail? I need to know... because of reasons. :nervous:

Re: A celebration of Freespace
yeah, actually I'll release the landscape (and crappy buildings, and rock arches I slapped together for the race) along with a bit of a tutorial on it since I have a project to work on (which means, obviously, that I'm going to be doing FS stuff instead)

[edit] lol it's over 300MB
