Strangest Bug I've seen
I made a new mission, moved my ship off to the side, spawned a cain and some cargo's at specific range increments to see how far the ship "drifts" after it warps in as part of the mission I was just starting. I loaded up to a strange sight. I had no weapons and no display at the lower right of my shields and hull. Further more I was dreadfully unmaneuverable and completely stationary. I used the outside camera to see that I was one of the cargo containers.

I deleted that container. I moved to the next one in line. I deleted all of them. I was the cain. I deleted the cain. And here's where it gets interesting. My weapons showed up as normal but I was completely stationary in all regards and the camera kept shaking violently, until my ship warped in (I now noticed what was supposed to be my ship warped in after several seconds instead of being there from the start). Stranger still, was that my engine energy kept increasing and I was gently drifting about and I realized that the AI (that had taken control of my ship when I was the containers and cain) was still in control, but I was as well. I could move around normally, yet always the AIs neutral "milling about" movement continued, and he would always continue increasing engine energy despite attempts to fix it. Starting a new mission did not fix anything.

I apologize if this is a well-documented bug, but I would like it some sort of solution this dilemma.

Hang on a second. How did you delete objects in a mission without going into FRED, saving and restarting? Or were you doing that?

Re: Strangest Bug I've seen
I was. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Do you have the mission? It would be much easier to say what the cause was if we could look at it.

This happened to me too once in retail, many years ago (which means it could be a repeatable thing, though a very rare one). Was kind of scary watching Alpha 1 jump in under AI control and crash into my container. Makes you feel sorry for cargo containers too.

Do put up the mission, without any changes; it'll help the bugfixers a lot.  :)

Of course. Delightful. Woke up today and it works fine. Ugh.

I prefer the bugs that I actually have to fix instead of ones that just go away, at least I would be able to stop them from happening again.

Once I ended up as an installation, because I made an invalid player name (by editing it in notepad), but that was about it.

Ah, but did you ever end up with Alpha Wing of Volition Bravos in CoW1?

Re: Strangest Bug I've seen
Wow. I must have done something to FRED somehow, cause it's all kinds of screwed up. Now, it seems to randomly give ships a million HP using the special hits. I'll spawn a dozen of them and most of them will be fine, but a few just randomly get a million HP, or sometimes an errant 65000 or 120000.

Edit: I though those two numbers, 65000 and 120000 seemed familiar so, going down the list of ships in the ship editor, I made a note of which ships had what HP and loaded some other missions I'd made. Lo and behold another mission had the same HP values for the same ships in the same order in the ship editor. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?

I've heard of special hits getting confused- they use variables, same as the ones you use in SEXPs, and editing existing variables can mess up special hits. But I've never heard of them getting mixed up between missions before. Maybe FRED is trying to open up variables from all your missions at once and is assigning those variables to the first ships you put in.

That first bug... reminds me of the BP one where everything disappeared spontaneously. I rarely use player entry delay, so A1 is usually there for me (awwww) when I start up the mission. That seems like it's a combination of player entry delay and something else- player-use-AI? It's creepy, anyway. :shaking:

Special hits do not use variables any longer.
No-one ever listens to Zathras. Quite mad, they say. It is good that Zathras does not mind. He's even grown to like it. Oh yes. -Zathras

3.6.12, unless I screwed up updating it somehow. Just plopped the exe's into the directory like I had all the others.

Oh. Good. 'Cause that system was far from ideal.

As long as you've selected said exes in the launcher you should indeed be using them.
