Tapping is especially good because 8 times out of 10 if you cock up, no-one notices ;)

unless the solos are written for 108bpm :p

once i hit about 150bpm it gets hard to alternate pick on the higher strings, espically if the left hand is moving around a bit.  i can get pretty fast on the low E and A strings.  I don't have a metronome so i can time anything.  I'll estimate around 200 bpm since i can almost sync with Master of Puppets on the CD (which is 220, with all downstrokes).  i've been playing for about 7 months or so, which can explain a bit.

Grug: Err... I think I went and drank some milk and Oreos... rested my tired hands :D

an0n: If you're feeling charitable today, go grab it and upload it wherever you choose, and I'll adjust the link. Ta.

Flipside: Playing for 15 years?! Wow, I could probably learn a lot from you. Record something for us to hear if you can. :)

Jiggyhound: My best advice is, keep at it - be patient with your playing (don't rush into playing a difficult piece), practice reasonably often, and you're well on your way to guitar happiness. :D

Ulala: It's called Resurrection, written by an Australian. Probably haven't heard of it. ;)

Setekh, seeing as you don't take lessons and I don't really want to either, how would you advise is best to get started? Books? Internet? Getting some chords and trying?

See, I have two perfectly good guitars (1 hand-made electric from his college days, 1 cheap acoustic) here belonging to my dad - he's not allowed to play them because it annoys my mum. I have nothing to lose by annoying my mum, hence I'm trying to start playing the acoustic.

get some books that teach you guitar.  usually they have primers for chords, scales, reading music and tab, and some basic songs.  luckily for me, my learning guitar book had some easy metallica songs like Enter Sandman instead of twinkle-twinkle little star.

also try Cyberfret.  The popups get annyoying unless you have a popup-blocker of some sort.

I had lessons for a bit, now i just teach myself, with my electric. Simple enough, get tabs, practice them.

its kinda useless if you don't enjoy metallica.  but mostly it has short riffs at first and it gets progressively more technical and faster once you learn basic chords.  some of the tracks in there are also simplified and slowed down since beginners won't be able to play at fast tempos.

Indeed, most of the advice above is pretty sound, just find a reasonably easy piece that you like and keep playing until you know it, then find another. Ironically at the moment I build guitars better than I play them.

I'm helping a friend at school with his A-level technology project, I'll post photos as soon as I finish it, his woodworking skills are pretty basic and he didn't think it was so complicated but then that's pretty much what I did. :)

We pretty much copied the body design from an ESP explorer, it's not going too badly but I've run into a moderate glitch I'm hoping I can fix tomorrow.

Building guitars is addictive.

You'll know your getting the hang of it when you can get someone opposite you naming chords and you can play them straight off. It's a good way to remember your chord shapes, at least, it taught me the major and minor chords in under a week :)

THEN I discovered Bar Chords ;) LOL

edit: personally i like the design on the BC Rich Warlock the best, but from what i've heard they are uncomfortable to play
