Just got a 419 over skype.

Quote
Hello Wolter,
CONTACT ME STRICTLY WITH THIS EMAIL:[[email protected]]

My name is Mr.Josef Odi, 48yrs, from Ghana. I work with a reputable bank here in Ghana.
Without wasting your time, I have in my bank the existence of a big amount of money (US$12,500,000.00) that belongs to a customer, Mr. Michael, and who happen to have the same surname as yours.

The fund is now without any claim because Mr. Michael died in a deadly earthquake in Indonesia, 2006. I want your cooperation so as to make the bank send you the fund as the beneficiary and next of kin to the fund after reading your profile.

This transaction will be of a great mutual assistance to us.i will appriciate your timely response or call <a number>

Thank you
Mr.Josef.

I mean, they're not even trying anymore. It's so textbook, I can't believe anyone's still using that script.

I remember the panhandlers down by South Station seemed to be getting their stories from the same playbook.  It was always funny when guys on different days had the same racket down pretty much verbatim.  It got to the point you could finish the tale for them.

So, after getting hammered writing my dumb editorial, my professor loved it. She commented happily this the first time a book has managed to get a student close to drunk, which I really tried to do.

I sadly finished the paper before seeing pink elephants, and escaping a hangover to so I could supposedly forget the ordeal. My liver and bladder took vengeance instead.

Regardless, I'm going to burn that retarded book and use its ashes to a paint a pipe. So my only utterance is: Screw Physical Materialism, May the New Atheists burn in vague linguistic hell, and Screw Academia for allowing frauds to write children's books. I encourage all atheists, hard and soft, to take Dawkin's book, burn it, plant it, cut it up, even make a monument out of it and worship it. That's what I'm doing, and encourage anyone who has half a brain to destroy all regalia associated with four horseman of frauds, spoon-feeding priests of positivism and champions of all that is anti-intellectual.

Death to Faetheism!

Joking aside, I really am going to paint a pipe with its ashes. My teacher loved my drivel where I went on a two page disparage of Dawkin's previous philosophical hodunkery, and it smells like alcohol because I left booze near it. It didn't take her that long to fully understand I really disprove of Dawkins after all is said and done. The paper even pissed of the resident New Aetheists in class, so I feel vindicated, and they tried to accuse me of being "anti-science" I retorted by reminding them that people like Dawkins only exist because of our willingness to be spoon fed like hoards at a Mass and they were in fact anti-intellectuals for supporting outmoded ideas killed in the 70s, so not all is bad.

just embrace nihilism, its easier and doesnt require reading any stupid books.

He's wrong, and a bigot. Even a rational person should be able to figure that out. But he's got a fan club.

i've had too many idiots tell me he's a beacon of rationality and reason and try to convert me to their camp during my so-called atheist days. Also, working in linguistics (which I sometimes regret for those two years) permanently lead to my vilification of New Atheism as a bastion of self-deserving ignorance. Some people even game me copies of the "God Delusion" expecting me to suck up his woeful logic and philosophical idiocy. Studying Logical Positivism only made it worse, I figured out where the four car salesman got their manuals and gear, and even now I still scratch my head at why Hilary Putnam was aghast with them.

He's a charlatan, a seller of snake oil. He promises people happiness by endowing them with rational enlightenment... the problem is he lacks integrity and introspect. This is why many philosophers have panned him. As for his book... its propaganda, flat and simple. If he thinks he can simply deconstruct old myths and legends and try to rehash it as "scientific" inquiry, he's effectively spit on everything we are, could and may be. The other is that book is nothing more religious pandering guised as "science." It's called pushing our ideas on kids, and I'm vehemently against such things. I've seen it with religious and right wing books, this is no exception.

Simply put, he and his kind need to be challenged, critiqued, and beat back. They failed philosophy 101 and I think it's time more atheists and agnostic step up to the plate and take a few swings too.

That's long on hate and extremely short on actual explanation. (And it's not self-supporting. Why is examining old myths from that perspective not science? Is it that it's not from the right perspective? Do you reject the idea categorically? What?)

Oh, right. Yeah, wouldn't want to upset the philosphers. They might go on strike, and then where would we get our... err...

Let the angry philosophers go off and talk about it amongst themselves for the next century or so - they're fine, they don't mess up the world the way religion does. Fact is that he's doing the right thing in getting people off religion. If he's going about it in a sub optimal way, well, I can handle that as long as it gets results, and indications are that it is. So more power to him I say.

Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over <number goes here> (posts)
I'll just shut up and accept the damn medicine, sorry.

Point is this: we need a sensible approach to understand and comprehending religion: philosophy is that tool, to an extent, myth was a tool to convey story and lesson. Here, the myths are being taken literally. I don't fault the science, but I question the context of the book. It's the same reason I call out literalism of Christian tradition as well.

The reason I took the thing so badly is because I study myth, art, and to extent symbolism... and to be honest, I think the book misses the point of explaining science in this regard. There are better ways of introducing children to science then trying to tear down old myths and replace them with scientific explanations. You have to approach it differently, but my problem is at the end of the day, the most rational methods are usually not the best. And I think kids are pretty smart enough they can make their own judgement calls after a period of time.

Edit: As for the image in the post above, I'm keeping that up. XP

From the very little of Dawkins I've read and/or listened to - or seen used by other people - I can understand Clucker's frustration if not agree with his line of reasoning.  I think Dawkins tends to do science - and by extension, rationalism - a disservice in his approach.  Science is supposed to be both rational and dispassionate.  Dawkins regularly fails in the latter category.

For scientists - among them theists, atheists, and agnostics - seeking a conciliatory approach to human understanding, Dawkins is more enemy than friend.  It's why I've tended to avoid his works.

More super happy fun layoffs at work today, on top of the layoffs from not even three months ago. At least the team I work with remains intact, for whatever it's worth.

my problem with him is hes just being a prophet for atheism. the whole point of atheism is to get away from the traps that come with religion. we do not do that if we model atheism after religion.

@Nuke: a "prophet" is someone who makes prophecies. I wasn't aware Dawkins dabbled in that sort of thing.

I was watching a playthrough of a game on YouTube, and got hooked on the story (and to a lesser extent the music)... but this particular youtuber didn't even get 1/3 of the way through the game. And other youtubers who went further either did voice-overs I didn't want to listen to, were using foreign language versions, or skipped through the story too fast to read the text. Now I want this game :(

What game, you ask? Why the frowny face, you ask? And why would it be worse to watch a lets play with voice-overs than a playthrough without any narration? How peculiar...

I finally get a job.
A job that pays better than anything I was expecting to get, and with a very real possibility of progression to a more than comfortable wage after my apprenticeship ends.
I finally meet a girl that doesnt have habits or a mindset that causes my stomach to churn or lose hope for humanity.
I got a new puppy.

Things are looking UP for me the first significant and meaningful time in my life....

And then reality drops a large steaming, carrot and sweetcorn loaded turd all over my good fortune sundae.

Seriously, what's the point in trying to better my quality of life when it seems that the universe is trying it's hardest to keep it at a steady level of "Mediocre bordering with occasional ****-storms? Why should I even keep on trying? Why do I keep on trying to care for a world filled with deviants and murderers?

Why does one event make everything feel like with ever step I take forewards, people I care for pay for it?
