Descent (yet again split from A celebration of FreeSpace)
That's the act of descending. It's a noun.

More importantly, at least for us, FS1 was marked as Descent: Freespace: The Great War, probably trying to use the Descent series' fame to give their new game a boost.
Sig nuked! New one coming soon!

The prefix "Descent" was used in certain areas undoubtedly because they wanted to get Descent fans interested, but the reason why they used a prefix at all was because there was already a compression(?) software called FreeSpace in the market.

In some areas (my turf included), the prefix was "Conflict". Don't know why. Don't really care.

i believe decent was used to avoid copyright infringements with an old (even by FS1 standards) game which retailed in the US under the name conflict freespace

It was called Conflict over here in Blighty.
Dunno why, not bothered why. Same game, different name.

Re: Descent (yet again split from A celebration of FreeSpace)
So, aside from the fact you're in a ship shooting stuff, there's no reason for FreeSpace to be "Descent" ?

... sounds pretty strange, since a lot of people out there keep talking about Descent, like having it being really related to FreeSpace (or rather the other way around)... e.g. in this thread oO

(and, yeah, thanks for answering my question. and sorry for posting in the wrong place  :ick:)

Re: Descent (yet again split from A celebration of FreeSpace)
Parallax Software, the development studio that created the first two Descent games, split into two separate groups after the release of Descent II for logistical purposes (they had two separate offices in Illinois and Michigan, and it was tough to coordinate between the two).  Half of Parallax formed Outrage Entertainment, under the leadership of Matt Toschlog; they developed Descent 3, Alter Echo, and the PC port of Red Faction II before being purchased by THQ and eventually closed.  The other half of Parallax formed Volition Inc., under Mike Kulas, and (obviously enough) went on to develop the FreeSpace series for Interplay; after also being bought by THQ, they've developed the Red Faction, Summoner, and Saints Row series, along with a game based on The Punisher comics franchise.  Since :v: was originally made up of people who worked on the first two Descent titles, there's been somewhat of a connection between the two series from the beginning.

(Fun fact: there's a Descent-related Easter egg in the final mission of FS2. :D)

I didn't say what it was or how you could find it, just that it existed. And it's old enough to be semi-common knowledge anyway. :p

Spoiler:
One of the cargo containers, the one carried by the GTFR Miranda, doesn't have the 'cargo known' flag set. If you scan it, you'll see it has the cargo "Dravis' diary".

On a side note, apparently that very cargo container was a TSC 2 and some noob changed it to a TC-TRI without changing the name.
