I'm personally a fan of the Avenger.  What are your favorite cannons?  They could be canon cannons or non-canon cannons.  Or even RL cannons, like mine.

Canon Cannon: Maxim. I love the range, and the devastation it doles out against anything small, like a cruiser, freighter convoy etc. Also, the FS1 avenger, mostly because it finally gives you a chance to kill some Shivans.
Non Canon Cannon: Mmm... dunno really, none really jump out at me as being particularly memorable - I think I tend to remember secondaries more.

Avenger(FS1) and Prometheus-S(FS2); Balor when I'm in the mood for dakka(mostly on a Nyx or Erinyes). BP's Rapier and Archer; Redeemer's also been amusing to experiment with.

Switching gears slightly, Descent(2)'s Helix cannon is <3 for sheer DPS/power potential at close range, also the Fusion(for the fun/BFG value, capable of burning through multiple enemies close together with a single shot).

Canons...UDoneit-8 Kaysers for general purpose and the Hiram Stevens gun for long-range anti-stuff.

Non-canons...CAWPR80/90? Maybe even the Doomgiv- I mean...uhh...VX-02a, the VX-89(?), the VX-railguns...ah~!

For cannons I'd have to go with the BP Balor. So spammy.

Gattler from WiH (yes, I'm aware it didn't had it's appearance yet, but it will nevermind). Gauss Cannon from Descent 2, just because it brought me throught the last planet (blasted green spawns!). Vulcan from D1, because it's easy to aim. Vauss from D3, for the same reason.
GAU-8 Avenger from real life. VK-01N from WoD. Maxim from FS canon.
Yes, I do prefer mass drivers.

Super Laser Lvl. 5 for epic pew pew sound, and the Gauss since you can practically beat the entire game with it alone (I have done a playthrough on Hotshot without switching Primaries after picking up the Gauss).

I can't decide for a cannon without a fighter because for me especially high energy/low firerate cannon effectivity hugely depends on the gunpoint position. Just try and hit attacking fighter in Artemis.

For FS1 it's definitely avenger/banshee combo on a valk (the only thing i love more is all-fury athena ), FS2 UD-8/Maxim on Ares.
Non-canon will be the Redeemer (i like it when capships blow)

Cannon canons, i'm a fan of the Mekhu. Favorite non-canon cannon is the Balor, although I'm sad to say I came the the party too late the experience the hilarious version in the first release of AoA.

8x Maxims on an Erynies.
The loadout is powerful enough to shoot down Shivan fighters at long ranges, even though the Maxim does only 1/2 the shield damage per second of an HL-7.

Other than that 4, 6 or even 8x Kayser, depending on the ship I fly (though I generally give the wingmen a backup gun that sucks less power on one of the mountings, keeps them from getting pwnBBQ'd when the Kaysers suck their energy reserves).

I love the primaries in WiH. There are almost too many. I have some fun memories of early WiH Multi where I used the unadulterated Redeemer for one hit kills
