First, I just joined the forum and would like to say thanks to everyone working on FSO, mods or HLP  Freespace is my favorite game and FSO makes it even a lot more enjoyable! I really enjoyed the mods I've played so far.

Now to my topic (I'm not sure whether this is a modding/modeling question):

I'm new to modeling and I'm working on my first model (based on the Homeworld Progenitor Drone).

Currently, I'm trying to put a texture on the mesh. However, it looks rough when viewed in the lab (F3 in FSO), while it looks fine in PCS2 (and Blender). Here are two screenshots with a dummy texture (just some line drawing) for comparison:

(viewed in PCS2)

(viewed in the FSO lab)

As you can see in the first image, the thin black lines are continuous (as they should), while they are dashed in the second.

I've tried different texture sizes (10242 and 20482), DDS and TGA formats, and putting the texture on an existing model. Always the same result.

Why does it look different in the game and PCS2 (or Blender)? Is there any setting causing this effect?

Using fs2_open_3_6_14_SSE.exe, Blender, Gimp and most recent drivers for my GeForce 8400 GS. The debug log doesn't complain about the model or the texture (besides a shield icon warning).

What is "3d hardware textures" set to in options->detail? Unless you're on ancient hardware, you'll want to crank that up to maximum. That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

Oh, yes, that solved it! Thank you very much!

"3d hardware textures" was set to 4/5. With 5/5 it looks as expected.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the support forum.

Wow, if it screws stuff up that bad even on 4/5 then that's pretty lame. :sigh:

  • FRED needs lambdas!
IIRC each step lower than 5/5 halves the displayed texture resolution. a 1024^2 texture at 1/5 would be 64^2... ouch (it explains this monstrosity). If it also reduces the texture memory needed in the GPU, it's a good way to get texture size to an absolute minimum, and most users have no reason to set it any lower than 5/5.

Perhaps this is a situation where the SCP could make a small change? I'm thinking maybe max out and deactivate all the in-game graphical options unless a launcher flag is used to reactivate them?

I believe ingame settings have recently been set up to max by default.
People are stupid, therefore anything popular is at best suspicious.

Yeah, I changed the default detail level to "very high", unless overridden in game_settings.tbl.
