Author Topic: Model Scales  (Read 2122 times)

I am using wings 3D to make some models for my mod and I am wondering how I can tell how big/small it will be in game.
Is there some kind of scale I can use from units in the editor to meters?
Thanks

You can rescale it directly in PCS2 after conversion.

1 unit in Wings3D is 1 meter in FS (I think. It works that way for me but I'm not sure I'm using the default scaling settings for conversion). Anyway, just build the model at whatever scale you're comfortable with and scale it up/down whenever you need to.

The way I do it is I import a model from FS2 and keep it by the model I'm working on.

But Shivan Hunter is correct, 1 unit in Wings = 1m ingame.

Or more generally speaking, 1 meter in FS = 1 unit anywhere else

IIRC the default scale is 20:1, but I'm going as far as 250:1 when building the largest ships- they're over a dozen meters long in TrueSpace, and I'm not even sure if the scene is big enough to have 3+ km long ships in it.

It's under Options->Preferences->COB Scaling Factor and I think that PCS 2 will accept any non-zero numbers; so a scale of 0.5 will shrink a model during conversion.

Selecting each subobject also gives the X, Y and Z sizes on the display on the right, and it's possible to rescale the model later on.

He's not using TrueSpace because he's not a masochist. The right answer has already been posted several times; don't go confusing him with this "default 20" business.

And what if I want to change that scale in wings if I want to make, say, a cruiser/destroyer?

There can be some precision and camera issues when trying to make very small things in Wings (like < 1mm), or when trying to make very large things (like a super-juggernaut)... but unless you run into these problems, you're probably good sticking with 1:1... and of course you can scale the model in either Wings or PCS2.

Just model and quit worrying :p

Sounds good. Thanks for the help

Now that I am set with the scale, I would like to know if there are any basic-advanced tutorials on actually modding in wings. I have played around with the interface and know how to move around, but I want to learn about more advanced techniques to use when modding my ships. Not just "place box here and... I guess thats my ship!!!"
