reminder to all Americans, tomorrow is the day you go and vote Libertarian (or at least Green) and generaly fight the system.
-
Libertarianism is such a fad. I'd be scared ****less if they ever took power.
-
Just vote...you guys have the freedom to go and vote for a political party or even spoil the ballot and less than 50% of you ever show up at the polling station. Us Canadians are just as pathetic so I'll give the same speech when Harper's minority government falls and we go into the next election.
-
Maybe if we all vote libertarian that magical world they live in will become real.
Oh, we can hope.
-
Oh yeah, your vote counts.
-
Can I vote for the magic 8-ball?
-

Actually, it's when you go vote and keep Indiana a solid red state, but take care of the Republicans in most other states. :p

It's bobboau.
-
i gotta do some research and find which guy is less of a scumbag. the less theyre getting from lobbyists ,the more they deserve my vote.
-
Lobbying is a minus, but I have no delusions; I'd sooner vote for a liberal scumbag than an honest conservative.
-
yah, dude you haven't been here very long have you?
anyway, I find it interesting that if you have the social position of a democrat and the economic position of a republican, all of the sudden you are living in a fanticy world of marmalade skies and lollipop forests.
or were you operating under the impression that I thought I had a snowballs chance on the surface of the sun of hell of getting my party into power anytime in the next decade?
-
Because I disagree with Republican economic philosophy. Hence, it is wrong. And if you support something that's wrong, you're living in a fantasy world.
Seems pretty simple to me.
-
well it's better than if I was a full blown republican, yes?

The eXile sez:
http://www.exile.ru/2006-November-03/election_2006.html
Making predictions is always a dangerous business, which is why we at the eXile decided that on this, our 250th issue, we'd roll the die and stake it all on a prediction that almost no one believes is possible. We'll stake ten years of hard-won credibility on just this one foolish prediction -- we're doubling down everything this paper is worth, and placing our girlfriends as collateral just in case. That's how good we feel about this. Ready? Here goes. THIS COMING TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2006, THE REPUBLICANS WILL KEEP CONTROL OF BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS.
So what makes us so confident? Dr. Johnson once wrote that "a second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience." The same is true when you watch a fourth election in which observers believe that the American public is finally going to come around and make rational choices, rather than the same proto-primate choices they've been making over and over again. Hope says that Americans will finally wake up; experience proves that the American public sides whichever brute picks up the biggest stick and bashes it hardest on the ground. And that brute has been, is, and will be the Republican Party.
In then goes on to say:
Your solution? You pledge to support the peaceful transfer of power to a junta, which will work to "restore order." But it can't be a military junta, because the ugly truth is that most Americans would eagerly support a military junta. Hell, they've been trying to vote for the closest equivalent to a military junta for decades now; even the "liberal hawks" love the idea of a military junta.
and now read this blog entry, from the bastion of all things liberal: DailyKOS (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/11/4/04233/2962)
I am certain, my fellow Americans, that our generals agreed on a plan for what to do if Bush refuses their demand long before this editorial was written. It gives me comfort to know that someone with our best interests in mind is now in control.

Demand for what?

I still think were going to be left in the dark. My state is to small for swinging the vote. So why should i vote tomorrow? If somebody is going to be governor in Alaska it has meaning. But the bog one. Not a chace in hell.
-
Don't worry, nobody else's vote counts either.
-
My state lights up red immediately after voting closes for the day. Luckily, that's what I would vote, so it doesn't really make a damn bit of difference if I vote tomorrow or not. It's about the only thing I like about this state.
-
Oh yeah, your vote counts.
Yeah and Santa gives me presents
-
-
yeah, my state is full of ignorant hicks, so it's a red state. i just hope my vote in combination with the black people that the ignorant hicks used to subjugate will tip the balance.
-
oh yeah your vote counts (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7236791207107726851&sourceid=docidfeed&hl=en-CA0)
but seriously, vote anyway, just to say you cared, if there is one thing that can be sure it's that you will at least be counted as having an opinion on the matter, even if it's ignored.
-
VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS
*runs*
;)
-
I've played Metal Gear Solid two, I know its all fixed..........No matter who gets voted for by the Yankage population, It'll all end with a giant stompey robot going *stomp stomp stomp* over half the planet painted in stars and stripes... :ick:
-
I voted for Nader, I hate everyone!!
-
I voted for neither Republican nor democrat for the senate and voted down the gay marriage ban. I only voted republican for Tom Davis for the house.
-
reminder to all Americans, tomorrow is the day you go and vote Libertarian (or at least Green) and generaly fight the system.
no, it's not - it's the day you go vote Libertarians are no better than republicans, infact and many way's they're much worse. the totality of the implementation of Libertarian party's policies would be the total and complete collapse of america as a free country within a genreation, the power vacuum their naive policies would create would be filled by the corporations they so highly worship and think would "do the best for all people" in their naivete - it would be cute if it wasn't such a damaging policy if ever adopted.
You want 1984 to become reality in america faster than the republicans could ever dream of it doing so? vote libertarian
--------------------------
vote green if the green candidate you are voting for is VIABLE and the republican in the race has no chance of voting - i like the greens more than the dems too for the most part - but if voting libertarian means making it easier for the republicans to keep/gain a sreat then i will vote democrat to deny them that seat. atleast the democrats try to be representative
-
anyway, I find it interesting that if you have the social position of a democrat and the economic position of a republican, all of the sudden you are living in a fanticy world of marmalade skies and lollipop forests.
libertarians have neither
you have such an extreme economic position that all but the most extreme republicans (read: bush et al) won't touch it with a ten foot poll - your economics and role-of-government positions would lead to corporate oligarchy within a generation
-
My state lights up red immediately after voting closes for the day. Luckily, that's what I would vote, so it doesn't really make a damn bit of difference if I vote tomorrow or not. It's about the only thing I like about this state.
i'm sorry that you're a freedom hating theofascist scumbag who needs go to some country where the fascism you support is welcome - because it's not welcome here
And this will encourage him to change his voting position how?
-
And this will encourage him to change his voting position how?
someone like him is beyond understanding why he is wrong, so you just have to point and laugh
he thinks these fascist bastards he's been supporting are good for america still.. and that takes the upmost ability to lie to oneself and believe exactly what is being spoonfed to them by the republican noise machine aka fox news, etc.
Nix... news for you - the republicans are BAD for america, BAD for freedom (they HATE freedom), BAD for your security, BAD for everything.
there isn't one thing the republicans do that is right (i challenge you to attempt to dispute that statement)
-
Can we please keep things civil?

Ad hominem attack. Again. You've been warned.
-

it's not very civil for them to be supporting bigotry against me,
it's not civil for them to be supporting neofascists,
it's not civil for them to think that they have the right to vote their religious **** into government
so what is less civil? chewing someone out, or supporting theofascism
-

as if half the forum doesn't do them anyway, as if you didn't ignore it when most of the others *cough*UT*cough*ngtm1r*cough* do it
when you can apply threats equally then we'll talk, until then you should stay out of it

you do realise that taking that attitude and speaking that way will do more than any other thing that can be said here to encourage any undecided people to vote Republican?
If you're wanting to create a polarisation, the very least you can do is portray your side in a good light; the language of 'theofascists' and 'they hate freedom' isn't all that dissimilar from the more repugnant elements of government 'war on terror' fearmongering, and I'm very surprised you'd use that same tactic to try and badger people into submission. Ultimately laughing at and blatantly insulting people for their political conviction will achieve very little beyond perhaps giving you a bit of masturbatory glee and sadly making you look like a bit of tosspot.
Respect and politeness, I've found, are always more effective than swearing and ranting - even if it's a tactic I've never quite mastered myself.
-
so what is less civil? chewing someone out, or supporting theofascism
This line made me laugh. I think he's serious.
-
you clearly haven't had to live in this country for the last 6 years tolerating the growing theofascism (and yes, that is a proper political-science founded term for it) in this country, you haven't had to toleratre even moderate christians trampling your constitutionally mandated rights your entire life!
They claim to "love freedom" - and yet they pass more and more laws that restrict it and violate others that protect
They claim to "love america" - and yet they call one of the most fundamental american rights, the right to criticize our government, "unamerican"
what more evidence could possibly exist that the republicans are no better than the taliban? if someone is not convinced of the abject evil of the republican party by now, then they're either evil themselves, or simply stupid.
I've found respect and politeness to be pointless with these people, especially since they NEVER observed them from the start. You think these people respect atheists? you think these people respect those who oppose the war?
-
so what is less civil? chewing someone out, or supporting theofascism
This line made me laugh. I think he's serious.
do you have a better term for a policial movement which believes their religion is the one-truth and makes laws based on it that effectively force everyone else to follow their religion, while that same political movement supports unchecked power of the executive?
-
As me mum says, empty vessels make most noise. :)
It's really very simple, Kaz; insulting people will not win you any respect or support, only lose it. It doesn't matter what your own opinion is, the way you act will colour peoples opinions of you and in turn what you say. What you have to decide is, do you want to even try and change opinions, sway those who haven't made their minds up - or alienate everyone with even the slightest difference of opinion?
You know, I think, that I agree with you on a lot of things. And yet, when you rant and rave, and insult people like this, I can't but feel myself drawn to disagree with you. For me, that says all that needs to be said.
-
Can we please keep things civil?
it's not very civil for them to be supporting bigotry against me,
it's not civil for them to be supporting neofascists,
it's not civil for them to think that they have the right to vote their religious **** into government
so what is less civil? chewing someone out, or supporting theofascism
So two wrongs make a right?
-
What you have to decide is, do you want to even try and change opinions, sway those who haven't made their minds up - or alienate everyone with even the slightest difference of opinion?
he's already made his mind up to support the fascists*
(the republican policies have all 14 characteristics of fascism... if it quacks like a duck, looks like a duck...)
-
What you have to decide is, do you want to even try and change opinions, sway those who haven't made their minds up - or alienate everyone with even the slightest difference of opinion?
he's already made his mind up to support the fascists
Shockingly, Kaz, people can change their mind in later years. Or, people may read this thread, and it may sway their vote. Now, who do you think - to the newly politicised and undecided young-un - is making the most rational sounding 'pitch';Nix - who pops up and says 'I think I'll vote republican this time'.
Or you - the person calling Nix fascist, 'freedom-hater', 'laghing at' and evil - in both bold and ALL CAPS (thankfully not red font or underscored words yet)- for merely expressing an opinion which like it or not it his democratic right to hold?
Generally speaking, I don't believe most neutral observers would view the side of 'right' to be the one that effectively calls the others enemies of the state.
-
anyone who would vote for the republicans at this point is a lost cause - hopelessly stupid and completely disconnected from reality.
-
anyone who would vote for the republicans at this point is a lost cause - hopelessly stupid and completely disconnected from reality.
That's exactly the type of attitude I'm referring to. There are some people, y'know, who are undecided. There are some people perhaps voting republican because they're first time voters and have seen information - lets for the sake of argument take your position of assuming unquestioned supremacy of one party over the other - only from one side, or from their Republican voting parents, etc. Or there can be people hedging their bets; unsure about who to vote for and going with an incumbent. Or traditional Rep. voters, unhappy with their party, but unsure of the benefits by voting for another.
In all thoses cases, provision of sensibly explained, intellegible and above all polite information as to your case might indeed be enough to sway opinions - because not everyone is as entrenched as you are. Whilst the concept of shuffling everyone who disagrees with you into the 'idiod' box is a very convenient and unchallenging way of looking at the world, it's also a highly blinkered one.
Of course, you've just called them Evil Un-American Fascist Fanatic Talibans, so no chance of that now....
-
Of course, you've just called them Evil Un-American Fascist Fanatic Talibans, so no chance of that now....
the truth is often unpolite
i'd just as soon shoot someone who would vote republican as look at them at this point - they've trampled my rights for six years and i'm quite frankly sick and tired of it and i don't have the patience left to be polite to these assholes
you couldn't have not noticed that i've slowly, but surely, become more and more angry and less and less polite over the past six years.
-
Anyway, turnout is huge. Especially here in Prince William County Virginia.

well.. electoral-vote.com is projecting
senate: 51 democrats, 49 republicans
house: 239 Democrats 195 Republicans 1 Tie
so if that happens tommorow, my disposition will hopefully start becoming sunnier again :D
-
yay! go democrats!!!
i'm leaving here at 1:30 to go and cancel out some ignorant hick's red vote
-
eh, don't count on the Democrats taking control of the senate. Them taking the senate really depends on Virginia. It is 48-Webb 49-Allen. Both canidates are absolutly dreadful and depends which canidate turns stomachs more: Mr. Muccaca or the Sexist that writes naughty books. The House is more likley though.
-
My state lights up red immediately after voting closes for the day. Luckily, that's what I would vote, so it doesn't really make a damn bit of difference if I vote tomorrow or not. It's about the only thing I like about this state.

You know, Kaz, not every single Republican is a theofacist who wants to ban gay marriage or renew the Patriot Act. Chill out, it all depends who he voted for.
-
That's hardly a landslide.
-
Sexist that writes naughty books.
god forbid someone that writes books that reflects things that happen in reality that they may not agree with
-
Shrug, he can write what he wants to write. I am just saying that other voters might not appreciatte it.
-
and that's, yet another, inredibly stupid reason to dislike someone
"omg! he wrote a book! it contained activities that i don't agree with! since he wrote the book that means he automatically agrees with the practices! i'm going to vote against him because he writes books that reflect reality"
we all know everyting author's write in their books are things that they agree with, I mean just look at 1984!
-
Like it or not it is politics. But, that really is only a minor tarnish on his record. The article in the washingtonian in 1979 was blazingly direspectful. Yes 1979, a long time about vs. Muccaca which was 3 months ago. Still if it wasn't for the article he would be trouncing Allen.
-
Like it or not, the proles are as thick as pig ****.
-
Do you mean poles?
-
no, he means average uneducated working class americans who vote republican despite the fact that republicans are doing everything in their power to exploit them and screw them over.
-
Do you mean poles?
you've not read 1984 have you? i think that term is used constantly in it
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/prole
and yes.. the proles are ****ing idiots.. the biggest flaw of democracy is the dumbest part of the population has equal power to the smartest part of the population
-
Ah, I have never read 1984. I did not know that.
Poles are a piece of **** anyway.
In regaurds to the senate, again, the gay marriage ban is really drawing alot of voters so don't be suprised if Allen wins.
-
As early as 7pm we will know whether they will regain control of the senate.

Tell that to lobbyists.
EDIT; proles - short for proletariat, a term coined in Marxism for the working class, the people who sell their labour to live (as opposed to middle/upper class, who sell produced goods or services performed by others).

if by that you mean a return to a country were you won't be arrested for not paying tribute to the government, then bring on the collapse!
while I'll admit many in my part go a bit further than is probably feasible, I think the common direction of both major parties twards larger more powerful central government is the biggest threat to the US as a free nation. I do not like the taxing and redistributing policies of the democrats, and I ****ing hate the theocratic BS from the republicans, so the only party out there that fits at all for me is the Libertarians.
vote green if the green candidate you are voting for is VIABLE and the republican in the race has no chance of voting - i like the greens more than the dems too for the most part - but if voting libertarian means making it easier for the republicans to keep/gain a sreat then i will vote democrat to deny them that seat. atleast the democrats try to be representative
you may be happy to know most of the votes I cast (when I had any opption at all, at least half of the ballot was unopposed democrats) were actualy for the greens, they managed to get on the ballot, all we (the libertarians) managed was a write in for governor.
and I live in Illinois, so, yeah, I doubt the republicans are going to make much progress here, so don't worry about that.
though while I do like the anti-corruption positions of the greens, they are, like the democrats, realy into government run, tax financed projects, I mostly only voted for them because they were the only choice not of the two major parties, and I think the issues of our political climate (two parties, no opptions) are more important than any issues in the short term.
BTW, do you have a site that would have information regarding Missouri's ammendment 2, I'm realy hopeing it gets passed, and from what I've heard it probly will, but I've heared a LOT of BS about it on the radio so I am sort of worried.
-
bobboau:
if you don't like taxes, you can stop taking advantage of what they provide - police protection, highways, electricity, army, legal system, sewers, water, and a million other things
of course you'd just be replacing it with a situation in which if you criticize the corporations you're tend off for reeducation.
"zomg someone told me the democrats are for big government, and someone told me that big government is always evil! they most both be true!"
democrats are for a government just large enough to do it's job - the job of protecting the people, promoting the general welfare, etc. democrats are for efficient government that serves the people - if that means government a that's somewhat larger then so be it. Government's job is to serve the people, and most of it's jobs only the government can do equitably (that isn't to say it cannot do it poorly as it does sometimes now)
the "redistribution" talking point.... oh puuhlease - even the father of capitalism recognized that the more well off should pay more in taxes- the value of an individual unit of currency is subjectively less for them, and they use more "stealth" government services (roads, police, etc - the things people don't think about)
furthermore there must be an equitable distribution of wealth otherwise a capitalist economy collapses.
furthermore the costs of providing welfare are less than the costs of no doing so - both monitary and societal.
hit me up on ICQ or something to talk point by point...
Libertarianism is the new hippy - and i mean that in the "naive idealist" kind of way.
PS: most of these things the government does, the market wouldn't do equitably or efficiently (not that government always does the later, but it CAN if people keep their eyes open) - money isn't everything and some people need to realize that - i make more money than you, i'm atleast 1 tax bracket above you
PPS: most waisteful spending in our government: military
PPPS: if we just balanced the budget that would free up almost $250 billion/year

Dirty underhanded tricks #1
Republicans abuse the EAS system to force radio add for republican candidate onto other stations: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/11/6/221343/779
-
Kaz, you're the perfect example why I vote republican in the first place. It's people like you that I would fear to have in power, with such hatred and such utter disgust for people in general just because their political alignment is not the same as yours. Spew forth as much anti-republican rhetoric you can, it's not going to change my views/alignment/ME. Thanks for coming out of the woodwork today, cause I needed a real good laugh!
And, if I really wanted to vote, I'd be voting all across the board if I could. Whoever has the best ideas, well then they get my vote. There's just not much that you can do in Utah, because the population is overwhelmingly conservative republican. Remember, we ARE the mormon headquarters of the entire world here. You can't make a dent if you vote democrat here in this state. You might if you moved to Nevada, but here it just isn't going to happen. I am a republican, and I'm tolerant of democratic ideas, not some hard-line extremo-facist nazi-loving america hating bushmonger. I just have yet to find a democrat that I actually honestly agree with.
-
my utter disrespect for republicans comes from their behavior. their consistent and unmitigated arrogance in legislating their religion, their trampling of civil and human rights, and their consistent polluting of the public information stream to manipulate public opinion.
You're tolerant of democratic ideas are you? do you support equal rights for gays? to you support following the constitution and getting god off our money, back out of our pledge, and stopping funding sectarian groups? do you oppose laws based upon religious purposes?
if you answer yes to those questions then I owe you an apology.

FBI Probing Voter Threats in Virginia
"The FBI is looking into possible voter intimidation in Virginia's hard-fought U.S. Senate contest between Republican incumbent George Allen and Democrat Jim Webb," reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The intimidation -- including threats of arrest -- appeared to be concentrated in heavily Democratic areas. MSNBC has more, available at ThinkProgress.

dirty underhanded tricks #3 - voter disenfranchisement in Georgia
Polling place sign in Georgia
(http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/gaid.jpg)
Only problem? Georgia voters don’t need to show ID. In September, a state court struck down Georgia’s voter ID law and as People for the American Way notes, “most voters do not need to show an ID of any kind.”
-
dirty underhanded tricks #4 - voter intimidation Allen style
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9i-_3TiN9g
This is one hell of a YouTube Clip. One that everyone must listen to, as it crystalizes the essence of the Republican KITV ("Keep in The Vote") strategy: lying and intimidation.
Please spread this far and wide. Allen is being investigated by the Justice Department for voter suppression, but if there is no public outrage, the investigation will die. The above clip, however, if spread far and wide, will create the outrage necessary to force change and make sure such criminal activity never ever takes place again.
Transcript of the voter intimidation voicemail below the flip:
"This message is for Timothy Daly. This is the Virginia Elections Commission. We've determined you are registered in New York to vote. Therefore, you will not be allowed to cast your vote on Tuesday. If you do show up, you will be charged criminally."
Update [2006-11-7 11:51:41 by pontificator]: If this were an accusation against a Democrat, this YouTube would be featured above the fold at the Drudge Report, and all the CNN/MSNBC/FOXnews mannequins would be babbling about it nonstop. Since it's an accusation against a Republican, however, I predict we'll hear nary a peep about this, unless we do everything in our power to draw attention to it ourselves!
Update [2006-11-7 12:8:53 by pontificator]: It's not just the Webb campaign making allegations. Allen's vote suppression tactics have been documented by state officials. Thinkprogress has more here.

-
my utter disrespect for republicans comes from their behavior. their consistent and unmitigated arrogance in legislating their religion, their trampling of civil and human rights, and their consistent polluting of the public information stream to manipulate public opinion.
Nice of you to lump me in with that category of people there. You're so quick to jump to conclusions, Kaz, it didn't surprise me at all.
You're tolerant of democratic ideas are you? do you support equal rights for gays?
Yes, I believe all humans should be treated equally, fairly, regardless of, race, sexual orientation, or any other factor that might seperate one person from another. I don't agree with gay people who force thier lifestyle and ideals down straight people's throats though.
to you support following the constitution and getting god off our money, back out of our pledge, and stopping funding sectarian groups?
I feel those have been written for a reason when they were written, and should not be changed. I see absolutely no harm in keeping God in the pledge of allegiance, and on the back of our money. If it was bad for America, don't you think something would have happened in the last ~200 years? If your interpretation of the Constitution is to remove God from the equation, then that's your view. I just find it trivial, and maybe it's my "hick upbringing" but I don't see what the problem is with this! Oh, BTW, I'm not mormon, I'm agnostic.
do you oppose laws based upon religious purposes?
Absolutely. Many state laws in my state are put into place with influence from the Mormon church. For example, people can't buy tobacco untill thier 19, and can only purchase hard liquor from a state-regulated liquor store. Soon, the lighter alcoholic drinks, perhaps even beer will be removed from grocery stores and gas stations because they fear that they'll lead to alcoholism. Oh yeah, you can't buy pornographic material from another state and have it shipped to Utah either, that's against another state law, no doubt influenced by the Church. The state of Utah's state laws are based upon the beliefs of the Mormon church. Ask any Utahn, and they'll tell you the same. If you want to see cattle, or rather a mass of zombies controlled by the government and the church, look at a traditional Mormon family, living in Utah. I'm glad I'm moving back to the state of Nevada soon.
if you answer yes to those questions then I owe you an apology.
Quite frankly, you do. The way you've acted really shows me what a lot of democrats stand for, and serves as a reminder why i'm proud to be a republican.
BTW Kaz, posting little isolated incidents makes the ENTIRE REPUBLICAN BASE a bad and nasty thing for america? I could post several other "dirty underhanded tricks" that the Dems have done as well! We could go round and round all day long, but it's just going to result in the acceleration of impending carpal tunnel syndrome. We know where we stand. Like others have said, chill the fu*k out.
-
BTW, Kaz.
keep fighting the good fight.
-
and yes.. the proles are ****ing idiots.. the biggest flaw of democracy is the dumbest part of the population has equal power to the smartest part of the population
So some people should be more equal than others, I guess is your point? I don't disagree with that those who go to the polls and vote without having an idea of the issues or of government pose a problem, but I wouldn't put it the way you did. What there needs to be is some sort of government or civics portion of standardized testing, then maybe we can work something out...

dirty underhanded tricks #3 - voter disenfranchisement in Georgia
Polling place sign in Georgia
(http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/gaid.jpg)
Only problem? Georgia voters don’t need to show ID. In September, a state court struck down Georgia’s voter ID law and as People for the American Way notes, “most voters do not need to show an ID of any kind.”
So? Voter ID is being done here in Indiana as well, but if people can't simply take the time necessary to drive out and get a free piece of paper to vote really shouldn't be voting at all, no?
-
The problem isn't really the poles, though Vote-rigging is a concern, it's not even really the politicians, it's the system they are working within. People shouldn't be politicians because it's a well paid career with a high profile and excellent prospects. They should be a politician because they genuinely give a damn.
To most politicians, it's a game, they want to get elected (a)for the money and (b) to prove they can. It's like Bill Gates, I suspect he sees the money merely as a way of keeping score these days, and politicians are no better, they'll flit from opinion to opinion and from soapbox to soapbox depending not on what they think is right, but what they think will keep them in power.

How are gay people "forcing their 'lifestyle'* and ideals down straight people's throats"? by wanting to be able to marry each other?
how is telling them "no, you cannot marry the person you love" any less straight people forcing their ideals and lifestyle down gay people's throats?
* Gayness is not a lifestyle, one is born gay
---------
Yeah, they were written for the express purpose of pissing off non-christians and are a violation of the constitution.
You see no harm? well.. i guess you don't believe i have rights then, and you think the constitution means nothing?
PS: "god" on the money and in the constitution were added in the 1950s, E Pluribus Unum is the motto of america - and god on the money and in the pledge violates that motto just as it violates the constitution.
It's not a "view" that the constitution mandates that, it's a fact.
even if they weren't added in the 1950's "historical reasons" are not a valid reason to violate the constitution. Should we go back to making women be disenfranchized, unable to enter the workforce, and basically property of their husbands or fathers because it was what was done historically? should we make black people be slaves because what it was done historically? should we allow people to cut up girl's genitals (or boys) because it is what was done historically?
i know you're smart enough to see the assininity of argumentum ad antiquitatem
-----------------------
pornography ban is unconstitutional.. challenge it... atleast you answered one of the questions right - now explain to me the difference between laws passed by the mormons and laws passed by other christians like putting god on the money
------------------------
No, you I don't owe you an apology - you support the violation of my rights and the supression of equal right of gays - one out of three doesn't get you pass on the test of rights.
let's start tacking on more questions - what about funding the boyscouts (clearly a violation of the constitution via the establishment and free exercise clauses) - they descriminate against non-religious individuals
==============================
nuclear1: state IDs are not free in most states, making them constitute a poll tax and therefore explicitly illegal - that sign is also illegal in that state since the state law requiring ID was ruled unconstitutional
[edit]
also sometimes the places you have to go to get those "state IDs" poor people are unable to reach because of transportation - you know not everyone has cars, some people are too poor afford them, and they cannot get time off work and/or a ride to the place to get the ID
that disenfranchises poor voters, and therefore is illegal

another installment of dirty underhanded tricks
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/11/7/154351/697
The Maryland GOP's ballot scam
Inaccurate sample ballots describing Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Senate candidate Michael S. Steele as Democrats were handed out to voters in at least four polling sites in Prince George's County this morning.
The ballots were handed out by people who said they arrived by buses this morning from Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Erik Markle, one of the people handing out literature for Ehrlich, who is seeking reelection, and Steele, the current lieutenant governor who is campaigning to replace retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D), said he was recruited at a homeless shelter in Philadelphia.
After a two-hour bus ride to Maryland, Markle said the workers were greeted early this morning by first lady Kendel Ehrlich, who thanked them as they were outfitted in T-shirts and hats with the logo for Ehrlich's reelection campaign. Nearly all of those recruited, Markle said, are poor and black. Workers traveled to Maryland in at least seven large buses.

I could regal you for hours on end with tales of the Dems trying by hook or crook to take MCAS Miramar from the Marines...

* Gayness is not a lifestyle, one is born gay
Actually, the only evidence people have presented is semi empirical in nature. So far no one has shown there to be a gay gene. And frankly human sexuality is a very complex subject. It is not as simple all biological and absolutly not determined to be mental in nature.

I doubt it even matters, to be honest.
-
No in most cases it doesn't and certainly doesn't necessitate a ban. A ban that would be declared unconstitutional accoring to interstate compact.
-
I think it depends on how you define lifestyle. There is a choice; there's always a choice if you have the will, or enough people breathing down your neck. That is the beauty and the curse of being a human.
The Boy Scouts of America does not discriminate against non-religious individuals, Kaz. To be quite frank at the local level most people really don't care if you're atheist or not. I don't know where you dig this bull**** up and don't much care. Yes, they mention God a few times in various formulaic responses. But the BSA has always embraced freedom of religion (which by necessity includes lack thereof). They even have religious medals for the Zoroastrians, for Chrissakes. Don't tell me they discriminate against non-religious individuals, you're talking out of your ass.
Yes, you have to know the Scout Oath to make Tenderfoot and above. That doesn't mean you have to practice it. I grant they want you to make an attempt; if you want to make it to First Class or above you pretty much have to make an attempt. But your attempt need not include the "God" of "to God and my country".
You confuse the actions of the few with the many. Overall National BSA policy does not give a good goddamn. Troops run by the Mormons do. I'd hoped you were more sophisicated than to deal in guilt by association. It seems I hoped in vain.

absolutely and totally incorrect statement - where have you been living?
they mapped the Xq28 gene
0% of subjects without Xq28 were gay
70% of subjetcs with Xq28 were gay

it's the diebold thingy, it ends with them filming a demonstraition of how to fix an election in a manner that would be totaly undetectable if it wasn't caught in the very beging (wich by it's self would be hard to do if the right people were involved)
If it was bad for America, don't you think something would have happened in the last ~200 years?
actualy most of that stuff happened in the 50s, and America seems to have peaked right about there, sence that tiem we have been on a slow generaly downward spiral.

Men With Guns Harass Latino Voters
Nina Perales, a senior poll-watcher for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), called me from Tucson's Iglesia Bautista precinct, where the three men are approaching Latino voters and videotaping them on their way to vote.
"As voters are coming out of their cars and walking up towards their polls, one person is videotaping the voter as he walks towards the polling place," she said. Then another person, wearing an American flag bandana and a shirt with the image of a badge ironed or embroidered on it, approaches with a clipboard to talk to the voter. "While the clipboard person is. . .talking to [the voter], the cameraperson comes up and starts videotaping their face," Perales said.
As this happens, the third man -- with a gun visible in a sideholster -- stands next to the voter. According to Perales, he is wearing a shirt with an American flag on it, and camouflage shorts.
The men only approach Latino voters, she said, and noted they have been doing so since early this morning.

I just have to say that as an outside observer that the whole election process down there is comedic. The election and electoral candidates should be the focus of attention and yet there are so many news stories about how screwed up polls are and so forth. I'll say it again...we'll send Elections Canada down there to do your elections for you. Course maybe we should keep them for our own.

Last time we had that debate, there was no gay gene.
Source: Biology and sexual orientation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biology_and_sexual_orientation#Chromosome_linkage_studies)
In 1993, Dean Hamer published findings from a linkage analysis of a sample of 76 gay brothers and their families. Hamer et al (1993)[7] found that the gay men had more gay male uncles and cousins on the maternal side of the family than on the paternal side. Further analysis by Hu et al[8] revealed that 67% of gay brothers in a new saturated sample shared a marker on the X chromosome at Xq28. Sanders et al (1998 cited in Wilson and Rahman 2005, p52)[9] replicated the study, finding 66% Xq28 marker sharing in 54 pairs of gay brothers. However, three teams (Bailey et al 1999, McKnight and Malcolm 2000, and Rice et al, 1999 cited in Vilain, 2000)[10] failed to replicate the finding. More recently, Mustanski (2005)[11] failed to find the Xq28 marker in a complete genome scan of gay men’s DNA. Mustanski did however find autosomal markers at 7q36, 8p12 and 10q26. The evidence for the Xq28 marker has therefore become muddied by failures of replication.

I'm voting republican this time around because I haven't heard any republicans call me or someone who agrees with some of the things I do a "freedom hating theofascist scumbag."
No, they'll just call you a Terrorist.
That being said, I'm technically a Republican, though not in the way most people think of Republicans. When most people think of Republican, they think of the Neo-Cons, the God-fearing Abortion-hating Creationists who want to impose laws that force people to act like the Neo-Cons do.
I'm a REAL Republican. I want to get Government (Especially the Federal Government) as far out of everyone's life as possible. I'm pro-choice (not pro-abortion, I just feel that it's a personal choice.), pro-Stem Cell Research, pro-Evolution, and pro-Gay and Lesbian Rights (including marriage! My opinion on homosexuality is do what you want in this life, and if there is a Hell and if you do end up there, it's your problem, not mine.)
****ing Neo-Cons keep making the rest of us look bad.

eh, don't count on the Democrats taking control of the senate. Them taking the senate really depends on Virginia. It is 48-Webb 49-Allen. Indeed.
At this moment, it looks like Dems are leading the House by 14, and the GOP is leading the Senate by 11.

Sounds like Turey is Libertarian... he'll probably vehemently deny it though, no one seems to want to be assosiated with us for some reason... :doubt:
I know that my views are very similar to those of the Libertarians, and I have no problem with that. I'm currently unsure about which of the two (Republican or Libertarian) I'll actually register as when I hit 18. Being able to vote in either of the two primaries is a pretty convincing reason for me to register Libertarian.

Is there a problem with academia exploring radical ideas?

In regaurds to the Virginia Senate Race, it will entirely depend on Arlington, Alexandria, and Prince William Counties.
-
Jim Jeffords from Vermont.
Wikipedia says
"On October 11, 2002, Jeffords was one of 23 senators to vote against authorizing the use of military force in Iraq. On this issue of foreign policy and other issues, Jeffords has strongly disagreed with the positions of the Bush administration.
With fellow Senators Trent Lott, John Ashcroft, and Larry Craig, he formed a barbershop quartet called The Singing Senators.
He also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do."
Dude, this guy's like...the man. A karate-chopping, rhyme-busting antiwar libertarian.

Not really, he demanded that the federal gov't pay all special education for the mentally handicapped in exchange to stay.

I said nothing of the sort. I just said there are a lot of them.

well if your on the fence keep in mind that the Libertarian party needs people to run in elections, if you ever wanted to be on national TV as a potential governmental candidate, joining the Libertarian party would probly get you in the race the if you wanted it bad enough. though you'll probly never get more than 5% of the vote.
democrats are owning in the governers department it seems, not bad in the senate, and laying wast to the house, ****! (thats the good '****') I am rooting more for the democrats than the republicans, I'd like to hear what they have to say after this
the Connecticut senate (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/CT/S/01/index.html) race is probly the most interesting one of all.

Now we wait for Pelosi to start jumping and screaming about impeaching Bush and company from office. Oh the drama that will ensue in America. In some lighter news, Ahnold will remain president of the state of California. :p
I loved his address: "I love doing sequels!"
-
Only in America could an Austrian Body Builder Immigrant run for political office and win.
-
I think that's a good thing :)
-
they were talking about him on npr and it sounds like he pretty much reinvented himself to manage the win - apologized for the ballot iniatives, stopped demeaning the democratic state congress and started working with them, etc
-
Now that it is clear they have control of the house, what next? According to some, it is hollow promises and half baked goals and implementation: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/06/AR2006110601121.html

Eh? what do you mean :p :nervous:

Well, Virginia and Montana are too close to call, they say. But Montana looks as though it will definately be Democrat, even with a recount, and Virginia looks like it has a slight lead with their Democratic candidate, that even with a recount, may result in "Virginie" going Democrat. (Oh the irony, I guess there just wasn't enough hoedowns in the state to sway the state for the Republicans). This is good news for Democrats, but also very scary news. This kind of reversal would have been preferred in 2008. Now they have to be very careful to both look good in the public's eye, and hope that Dubya continues to look like a bafoon, or continue to make him look like one, in public opinion.
-
*snicker*
I knew it. Just about every single candidate was red from my state, and it was no surprise that Matheson was elected either.
Now we wait for Pelosi to start jumping and screaming about impeaching Bush and company from office. Oh the drama that will ensue in America. It'll be the Clinton sex scandal all over again, cept this time it'll be about the mismanagement of the war. "A new direction for America". Yeah, right down the ****in toilet.
Yeah, it'll be the Clinton sex scandal all over again. Well, replace "blowjob" with "disastrous, hugely expensive war", but those two are pretty much interchangeable 'cause I dunno how you do it, but every time I get a blowjob, hundreds of thousands of people die, and I can't for the life of me figure out how I'm going to get my penis out of there after the mission is accomplished.

Must refrain from making joke about title. Must... refrain...

Eh, first keep in mind the reason's that George Allen is loosing because of the Iraq war and the Mucacca Comment. Yes this is good news for the Dems, but both of these areas are incredibly conservative regaurdless of migration into Va from DC. Keep in mind that in montana the difference is razor thin and a lack luster performance in the house and or senate with no vision could easily hurt democrats, and have things swing back the other way. With such tight races and very little breathing room, these seats in the senate could easily be taken back in 6 years. Keep in mind, that this was NOT a triumph of idealogy and thus I ask is it really a true victory for the democrats? Personally, I think this is simply a gut reaction. If you ask them why you voted democrat, it will be due to the scandals and etc. Not the exemplar vision the democrats have given. On a side not, prepare for filibusters galore.

oh, and the reaction of the talk radio guys... well let me describe to you the first thing I heard on the radio this morning
"well... /*twenty second pause*/ we beat the smoaking tax... the... four cents on a... pack of... ...ciger...etes.... you can just talk all you want to about that, cause we... beat that down....... so, it wasn't a _total_ loss... ..."
this made my day so much brighter, cause he was the guy who was all like "Amendment 2 will allow human cloneing and take away all of your freedom forever!!!!!", jackass.

if you guys want to hear the conservitive reaction to this click this (http://www.bmilem.com/m/?s=kftk-fm&q=kftk-fm2006714a153250)
though right now O'Reily's on, he's not realy so much a typical talkshow conservitive, and there is a drive home show (Glover) who's probly going to be laughing at the republicans just as much as us. but in 15 minutes glen beck is going to be on, he should prove sutable entertainment :) and Hanety'll be on, he is probly going to have a nevous break on the air

Yes, I think my point was essentially that this is either an opportunity for Dems to take control for an extended period or an opportunity for them to screw the pooch royally.
-
My point is that their hand is not as strong as they think.

-
why don't they just call Virginia already? there is only one county that has votes outstanding, and it's strongly democratic.
-
Wrong, there are two republican counties counting. Fairfax City is finished.
-
the only reason they don't call it is the spectre of recount
-
which two? all I saw was fairfax.
-
oh, Isle of Wight, and Loudoun, 92% and 96% respectively, I don't see how it could be posable for it to be anything but deomocratic, though I guess recall makes some sence.
-
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY & JAMES CITY COUNTY

Recount?
Although I think Isle of Wight is the only one left not finished.
Again I am not sure how they handle absentee balets
-
Isle of Wight??
I thought we still held that one ;)
-
Nah we annexed it secretly in our plot to take over the world.
Seriously, Virginia, being one of the older of the 13 colonies, has alot of name 'borrowed' from Great Britain.
-
My point is that their hand is not as strong as they think.
It's not, but it's still a good hand. Like poker, often it's not about the hand that makes the difference, but they way it's played.
-
And like poker you can be doing well then all the sudden get completely ****ed in the next hand as well.
-
The just need to stuff a sock down Kerry's throat so he can't speak, then lock Hillary in a closet so she won't scare the sway voters away, and they'll be alright. Oh, and of course they also need to keep letting Bush screw up, that's key. Rumsfeld being out is a bit of a blow to the Dems though, he could always be counted on to provide a handy POW/abuse scandal when you needed it the most.
-
And like poker you can be doing well then all the sudden get completely ****ed in the next hand as well.
True, but in this case I believe the Dems have a better hand than the Republicans. So in this case it's all a matter of how well they play they're hand. If they play it right, they'll come out ahead in 2008, at least as far as the legislature concerned. The Presidency is another subject entirely. The Republicans may still have a good chance if they put a strong MODERATE candidate forward. Otherwise they'll probably be screwed. And Shade's right on the money. The Dems will probably have more problems than benefits if they put Hillary forward as she'll scare swing voters away.

Why the frell does anyone in America need to declare english as a national language? Aside from chest thumping.
-
Why the frell does anyone in America need to declare english as a national language? Aside from chest thumping.
So Illegal immigrants, or legal ones not willing to learn English, aren't able to do very well.
-
why is French the national language of France?
-
Because it's France.
American should be the national language of America... and American will just happen to be Spanish with a dash of English pronouns ;)
-
why is French the national language of France?
Because they suffer from the universal delusion that their culture can be preserved. Making English the national language of the U.S. is like damming a river with some toothpicks. It's a meaningless, laughable gesture that's only effective in distracting people from the precious few things they might actually be able to change.
-
well it being a universal delusion, then that means that you must suffer from it as well and as such must be in favor of making English the national language of the USA.
-
Ah ah ah, nice try. Universal in populations, not in individuals.
-
The GOP-dominated Legislature rejected other ballot measures to criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants in Arizona, set state punishments for businesses that hire illegal foreign labor and stop communities from prohibiting police enforcement of federal immigration law.
It seems to me that most politicians don't actually want to do anything about the immigration issue. I mean, they all seem to want to make life as hard as possible for illegals, while at the same time prefer not to do anything to actually combat the issue other than "let's build a big wall!". Making the hiring of illegal immigrants illegal would do volumes to combat the problem, and yet policy-makers just choose to turn the other way? What the hell, man?!
-
well as long as the problem goes unresolved they can continue to get elected to fix it.

Yes, Virginia finished counting in Fairfax, Loudon, and Isle of Wight. By the slimest of margins.

Yes, 'quit'. As in, go or be pushed and further humiliated.
-
Eh, considering what happened in the past with Rumsfeld supposedly handing in his resignation a couple time and having it refused...

Didn't the US have a referendum at some point to decide whether the National Language would be English or Spanish? I'm sure I heard that somewhere.
