I need denser asteroid fields... that one just looks too sparse...

Good looking, but what's up with those glare effects?
They are obviously not generated by the FS engine.

What makes you say that?  The FS engine has supported lens flare for a long time, it just isn't usually used that heavily.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Yeah, I've been experimenting with lens flares. Those are definitely in the mission.

[EDIT]: ShadowGorrath PM'd me about how to make the lensflares, and since I'm not one for giving out info exclusively I thought I'd put together a small mod folder with them in it and a test mission. The stars-str.tbm describes the syntax in detail- for more info see the Wiki page on stars.tbl. The effects themselves are some simple things I made when first learning GIMP. Feel free to use these and derivatives thereof in any mods. :)

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
About the asteroid field thickness, I suggest you to use bigger asteroids.
TBP has some very large ones, but unless you can find their author, you may not be allowed to used them.
WoD also has custom asteroids, which are larger than stock ones, but smaller than in TBP (which, TBH, are luducirious when it comes to size).

It's wormholespace in EVE, 'fess up!

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Dragon: That's actually the opposite of the kind of 'feel' I'm going for. Think, an asteroid field (a large one, so there's room to fight in without noticing that the rocks are confined to this tiny box in-mission), with relatively small rocks among a few larger ones, that can actually be used as cover when dogfighting...

brb, gonna frak with the scaling on the mediavps asteroids (there are three sets that look virtually identical... I might as well differentiate them somehow).

NGTM-1R: wut

[EDIT] Scaling was able to make the fields a bit more interesting. Still kinda wish the asteroid limit was 65536 though :/

Now I guess I could use a background bitmap to create the illusion of a larger field... *opens up GIMP*

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Yeah, I've seen backgrounds in EVE wormhole systems that look pretty similar to those. Though their asteroid fields are less...linear. And have nicer rocks.

Vast numbers of asteroids are a great way to kill performance :blah:

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
I always found it kind of funny that in the second mission of Freespace 1, where you have that horrific pixelated background that's supposed to represent that you're in a dense asteroid field - whenever I recall that mission in my mind, I always remember it as a genuinely dense field of asteroids.

Anyway, I guess this doesn't really relate to anything you guys are talking about, sorry.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Check out mjn.mixael's idea to replace that asteroid bitmap. I think this would look incredible.

I tried to remake it at higher res but I couldn't get it to convert to DDS with alpha channel.. here's what I made at 1920

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
While you're at it, make it a skybox rather than background bitmap.

That would make it much easier to synch the lighting from the mission's light sources to how the asteroids look like.
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Lighting isn't applied to skyboxes, is it?
