Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Hi All; I went to your download sight and downloaded, but I did have problems with doing it. ie, I have broadband but it still took 6 minutes to download, maybe my problem. Then when I tried to install, it asked me what program I wanted to use to open it. What program do I use to open it? Or do I need to have fs2 open when I try to install? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

It shouldn't need to be "opened". It's an .exe.

try a direct link. maybe the re-direct is screwing you up.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!

What is this FreeSpace Open Installer? What does it do for you? I don't see an explanation here on the site but assuming it must be here somewhere. I just loaded the retail version and looking forward to trying the Multiplayer. I tried to create an account on www.pxo.net without success and then ran into this site. Any explanation on what the Open Installer is and what it does for you would be great.. Thanks.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
It installs an upgrade for FreeSpace 2. It has amazing graphics, fewer bugs, and a more powerful engine for modding and FREDing. If your computer can handle FreeSpace Open (and almost all can), you should install it. It makes the game look like it's brand new.

For more info on FreeSpace Open, see The FAQ.

Well, you don't need Retail Freespace 2...

Retail IS needed for this installer. Frankly, It'd be quite a bit of work to incorporate all the necessary retail files, and I'd only be duplicating the excellent work done by ShivanSpS. If you want Retail and Open all at once, go get that.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
When I click the link to the installer, a web page opens for a second, then closes. Nothing downloads. Is this installer still supported?

This installer was excellent.  I used it, after being puzzled at all of the necessary files that you need.  It made things so much easier.  Thanks a lot.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
In preparation for the release of 3.6.9, I'm taking submissions for mods to be included. If you have a mod and you wish to have it considered for inclusion, please do the following:

EDIT: Mod text file format has changed. See how to make mod text files here.

Quote from: old
1. Upload all the mod's files to a server which allows direct links. Not FileFront and its ilk.

2. Upload a .txt file to a server with the following format (mediavps are used as an example):
Code: [Select]
mediavps
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mvp368zeta/
mv_music.zip
mv_textures.zip
mv_core.zip
mv_effects.zip
mv_models.zip
END
This file would download http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mvp368zeta/mv_music.zip, http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mvp368zeta/mv_textures.zip, etc. into a mod folder in the FreeSpace 2 folder with the name at the top (in this case, mediavps).

3. post a link to the text file in this thread.

Thank you very much for reading this.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Ooh, super. ;7 I will do this right away for the FSPort.

One issue with your text file.  It doesn't appear to distinguish critical mod files (mv_core) from optional ones.  Also, it doesn't allow you to specify the name of the mod.  For example, I might want to send you a text file for the Port, but I might also want to send you one for Awakenings, which requires the Port.

Kudos for the text file idea though; that's really clever. :)

Ok, I put in section dependency. Here's an example of how you'd do it. You post this:
Quote from: Goober5000
This mod is named "FreeSpace Port".
It doesn't need any other mods to function.
(link to text file, as above.)

Then this:
Quote from: Goober5000
This mod is named "Awakenings".
It needs the Port to function.
(link to text file, as above.)

Then this:
Quote from: Goober5000
This mod is named "Awakenings Voice Pack".
It needs the Port and Awakenings to function.
(link to text file, as above.)

Posting those three things would give you this:

EDIT: Alright, some more about the text files. The text file should be hosted in a place where it can be changed by the mod leader when the files change. That's why I'm asking for a link.

Also, I realize that some mods may have files in multiple places, on both the internet and the computer. Therefore, I've added two more "commands" to the text file:
Code: [Select]
mediavps
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mvp368zeta/
mv_core.zip
mv_effects.zip
mv_models.zip
mv_music.zip
mv_textures.zip
NEW
www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/tureyhall/
mp_standard.zip
CD
mediavps\data
mvlauncher6.ini
END

NEW changes the download URL from the one specified in the second line of the file to the one on the line after NEW.

CD changes the mod directory from the folder in the first line to the folder after CD.

Hope this makes sense.

Do you need to install the mediavps, or do they come with the install?

No, you don't.  You choose which vps to install during the process, and the installer automatically downloads them for you.  It's pretty foolproof.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
any ETA in mind for 3.6.9?

also I haven't tried it yet but to be honest I was worried that installing the FS1 to FS2 port was going to be a nightmare..... with 3.6.9 will most of the upgrades bey simple 1 click processes?

yeah I know I'm being a pain but just wondering and I will certainly take the time to do the discovery on how to get it working in month or so..... atm busy with work.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Installing a mod is actually very easy even without the installer. You just need to know the correct thing to do. When I install a new mod it very rarely take me longer than 30 seconds (excluding the time for the rar or zip to extract of course).

Turey's installer should make things a lot easier though.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Of course. Which is why I like the installer but it's not a 100% solution because people will want to make their own mods or download ones the installer doesn't support (new releases especially) so there will always be a need to know what to do.

Being able to see how the installer did it though will be a big help though. I doubt as many people will be sticking mods in the main folder once they notice that the installer doesn't do that for instance.
