Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Could someone who is running Linux try using the Installer with wine? If it works, that'll save me a whole lot of time looking for a scriptable installer for Linux.

Also, could someone running Mac try the installer with a wine-like program? (perhaps darwine?)

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
This seems interesting enough...

I'm curious.

What would be involved in enabling a simple option - to upgrade only the executables (latest Launcher.exe, fs2_open_r/d.exe, fred2_open_r/d.exe), only graphics (MediaVP's) or both?

Another thing - does this installer overwrite files or does it create, say, a backup folder named "old executables" or something like that? What does it actually do with executables? Does it always dump a file named "fs2_open_r.exe" into the FS2 root directory, or are the executables that it dumps into the directory named distinctively by description like 369RC7-9X, or by date like the CVS builds?

What happens if there already is a file with same name in the directory? Does it promptly get overwritten?

By the way, I'll have to ask what would be the advantages and disadvantages of distributing total conversions (TBP, BtRL, SoL et al) as downloadable packages that could be installed using a package manager of choice?

Man, it would be so cool to just invoke

$ sudo apt-get install beyondtheredline

or equivalent... :pimp:
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Alright, Installer has been updated. I got tired of telling people, "Use the installer, then download RC7.9x." See the first post for details.

Note that you can't actually get the new version yet. www.mydatabus.com (otherwise an excellent file host) seems to have the annoying inability to tell that a file is gone and that the name can be reused. So I'm trying to upload the Installer, and it's naming it core_files[95].zip instead of core_files.zip, and it's a PITA to change the names in the code. I haven't heard back from the staff of mydatabus on this issue. Give me 30 min and it should be ok. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Also, please keep submitting your mods/campaigns to be included in the Installer! I've gotten 3 so far, but I know there are many more good campaigns out there!

EDIT: OK, as a temporary fix, I've uploaded the files that weren't working to my other mydatabus account. Everything should work now.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
I'm having trouble downloading your installer.  I'm having the same problem that somebody else had and that was that windows didn't reconize the format and wanted me to "open" the "file" with a program.  And when I clicked on your direct link it said teh file was missing.  Could you post an updated direct link or tell me what to do?  Thanks in advance.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
as I said above, the URL changed slightly. The old one will be back soon, but until then:
First try this link.

If that doesn't work, try this one.

Tell me which one works.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
They both downloaded but windows still wanted me to choose a program to run them with instead of it just installing.  am i the only one having this problem?

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
NEVERMIND,  I just renamed the file and added and .exe extension.  Worked fine.  If anybody else has problems like that, try that!  Thanks

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Installer has new version (A few bugs fixed/minor features added) and has been moved to a new server. Thanks to [DW]-Hunter for the hosting.

Also, for those people who have had problems with the re-direct, everything uses a direct link now.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Just grabbed the new version of the installer but right before the end it freezes for me and uh, well eats up all my memory :(

The previous version of the installer worked just fine. (Yes i did try this on a 'fresh' install of FS2 incase you were wondering =P) Any ideas?

Thanks,

What options did you select? It looks to me like you're having problems with the mods. I've had the same problem as you, but only when my school's porn filter decided to block Game-Warden.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
I selected everything (including mods). No filters here though, no proxy, etc.

I'll re-try without the mods selected.

Edit: Didn't select the mods this time, install went just fine. (I can reach game-warden.com just fine btw).

Thanks for the help and for this great installer!

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Alright, try downloading the Installer again. I've put up a new version that should give an error message and allow you to continue on instead of hanging.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Something is seriously wrong. That error message not only shouldn't come up if your internet is working, but there is no way in hell it can come up FIVE times. That line only has four chances to pop up that box, so how you are getting five times is beyond me.

It's your computer somehow. Just get the mods manually.
