****ing deliveries.  i've been waiting all day for my RMA'd motherboard that the fedex website said was on the truck and out for delivery at 830 this morning.  wasted beach day.

so after the nearly 3 weeks of downtime since my desktop ate it, and wasting all of today waiting for the delivery that finally got here at 8 pm, and reassembling my entire system, the problem isn't fixed.  the remaining explanation seems to be my video card happened to fry at EXACTLY the same time i flashed my BIOS.  how the hell that happened, i don't know.  now i have to either track down a friend with a card i can borrow to confirm or take it on faith and buy a new one.  ****.  it's not supposed to be time for a new vid card yet, this one is a 6950.

i've never had such rotten luck with computers since i started building my own in 10th grade.  maybe this is just it all catching up.

yeah, well i either have to shell out a substantial amount again for the same level card, or put out around $400 for only one generation newer.  i usually skip at least 2 generations.  i went from radeon 9800 pro to 4850 to 6950 (flashed to 6970).  i've also never spent $400 on a video card.

well, the good news is i'm still under warranty.  the bad news is that many internet reviews state that HIS RMA process takes about a month.  on top of that, flashing the BIOS probably voids the warranty, and i have no idea if they would discover i've done that.  so do i take the risk on the RMA and go without my desktop for another month, or shell out for a new vid card?  i've got the cash to spare, but i have a hard time making myself spend money on stuff i don't have to.

-WARNING- CONTENT MAY CAUSE DIABETES

"Sue Drummond was walking her beloved Shih Tzu, Bibi, on a pier in Melbourne, when a fierce gust of wind picked him up and hurled him into the rough waters of the bay. A passerby, Raden Soemawinata, who happened to be on the pier that day to scatter his grandmother's ashes, wasted no time in stripping down and diving into the bay to rescue the animal."

I laughed when I read that

Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over 1000!!!!! (pages)
so when i went to the beach today for an evening session, there were police, fire, and other assorted emergency personnel EVERYWHERE as i drove up, and when i got onto the sand several boats and a helicopter patrolling.  didn't figure out what was going on at the time, but hoping on the internet back home reveals a 10 year old kid is missing, ans surely drowned by now.  they haven't found his body yet.

so beach safety tips:
1) if you can't swim/are a poor swimmer, you have NO business going out to far sandbars, no matter how shallow it is or how easy it is to get there.  tides change that in a hurry.
2) never go out to rescue someone alone.  the woman who got to them first was almost drowned herself by the kids pulling her under.  other people got there in time to save them.
3) you're not cool for sneaking up onto the construction pier and jumping off.  the reporters don't know who the people who did this were though, maybe they were people trying to help, but it confused the lifeguards and police.

Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over 1000!!!!! (pages)
i wish i could swim in our water at our beech and not catch hypothermia. ****ing glaciers dumping ice into it. though there is an epic swimming hole at the gravel pit near my sister's place. it just needs to be sunny for a week to heat it to acceptable levels. and the creek isnt bad place to swim when the fish aren't biting (also a good place to get free lures). swimming at a beach is kinda dull after youve swam in places with razor sharp rocks or 3 feet of silt at the bottom.

Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over 1000!!!!! (pages)
I'm watching a recorded debate between Eugenie C. Scott and Kent Hovind about the merits of the Theory of Evolution and Biblically literal Young-Earth Creationism.  At twenty-five minutes into the fifty-minute runtime, Hovind, while denying the Theory of Evolution, has proposed that common ancestors to modern animals are what were shuffled onto Noah's Ark, and that in 4,400 years, those ancestors developed into their modern equivilants.  What he's done, essentially, is said that the Biblical account of creation not only requires the Theory of Evolution, but it requires that evolution function about three to four (or more) orders of magnitude faster than science proposes.

I swear, I'm going to watch the rest of this debate, but I need to stop laughing first.

Went away for the weekend for my youth group's annual retreat. It was just what I needed to mark the start of the mid-semester mid-year break. I've come back immensely refreshed and much happier.

What ought I to do for my birthday? I mean, I never really do anything for it, but I feel like doing something

Brother wants me to go clubbing, really only so he can have a reason to do the same
Friend of mine said partying hardcore, and another jokingly said "Eat at the restaurant and work"

Was close to throttling my sister earlier, after she decided fairly firmly that her smoking (at 16 years old) had more benefits than costs. Also pissed off because I shared a photo on facebook and copped some criticism from a mate who thought it came from a source that equaled 'left-wing propaganda'...and I expected a bit better from him.
