first off, just wanted to say many many thanks for going to the trouble of working on this terrific game.

second, apologies in advance.  I thought I was doing this all the way it said to.

when I try to launch FS2 via the launcher I get the stuff I'm pasting.  When I launched it via debug.exe I got the stuff I'm attaching.  I'm also attaching the fs2open.log per the instructions in the FAQ.

the only thing I can tell you is that I've got 3.7.0 open and MediaVPs_2014 per all the instructions I was able to find on how to install all this stuff.

You need a newer build than 3.7.0 to run the 2014 MVPs. Grab a recent nightly build from the Nightly Builds subforum of the Source Code Project forum.

 
damn, i really wanted you to be right.   Same problem. 

I grabbed the no-sse version; should I try the other two? standard and sse?  I admit I didn't really read anything about what SSE was.

Did you remember to select the new build in the launcher? Use standard unless your PC is really, really, really old. SSE is a standard feature of PC processors for at least a decade running.

you should also move your install to C:\Games\FreeSpace2 (cutting out the GoG subfolder) to prevent an occasional error caused by long path names, but unless I'm dumb, your error is definitely caused by not having a new enough build.

If you keep getting the error with the new build selected in the launcher, please post another debug log.

Yeah, your debug log says you're on 3.7.0. Any of the test builds would be 3.7.1 (odd numbers are releases, even are test builds).

I'm an idiot.  That was the easiest fix I've ever seen.  Thank you and apologies for my stupidity.

okay.  couple more questions.

1.  OH MY GOD THAT'S GORGEOUS!!!!
2.  okay, that's not a question.
3.  are there ANY campaigns that DON'T work with this?  I downloaded a whole bunch including fs1 and a whole slew of others. 
4.  can I get rid of the older build stuff now?  the 3.7.0?
5.  what's the difference between the SSE, non SSE, and standard versions?

and....just...wow...thanks to everybody who updated this thing.

now GO DO THE SAME THING TO X WING ALLIANCE BECAUSE I CAN'T GET IT TO RUN CLEANLY ON MY COMPUTER

You should use standard versions - that's basically all you need to worry about with SSE. The others are for old processors.

Most custom campaigns will not work with the 2014 MVPs without some tinkering, so you should probably install the 3.6.12 MediaVPs as well.

Until campaigns are playtested and proven otherwise, people generally assume older ones won't work perfectly. For instance, the beam fade effect in early 3.6.12 mediaVPs (in addition to looking absurd) broke Derelict and I assume many other campaigns. They're not guaranteed to not work, but expect the issues to come from the weirdest places.

The best way to tell is to play them and find out! You'll have to change the "mediavps_3612" to "mediavps_2014" in the mod.ini files in their mod folders.

I usually keep the stable build and a few others, but if you want to keep your FS2 folder clean, there won't be a problem.
