The thing is, I have to work with my own skill set.
Plotwriting: Learned Pre-HLP.
FREDing: Pretty decent, getting better every time I open FRED
Technical stuff (like this): I'm learning, hence my third help me thread this week, but thanks to everyone I getting past the hurdles.
Modeling: I don't have the skill or time.
The problem is, I needed a big selection of ships, including SOC ships, that worked. I'm trying to avoid modeling or modifying new models both because it's hard and because it would make the project take too long- the more I try and do, the less likely it is to get released. In my case, story is the top priority, and gameplay is a close second. Graphical quality is a low priority. (I will, however, be retabling some of them)
I know that INFR1 ships work (have gun and missiles points installed on the models, have camera viewpoints, have shield meshes, et cetera) because they've been used. Downloading random ships off the user-made ships page would leave me with a lot of incomplete ships that I don't have the resources to fix. No other mod has the set of ships I need- BP lacks Vasudan ships, Nukemod's ships use bizarre mechanics I'm not interested in using... there's only half a dozen or so actually released packs with large ship selections, and all of them have big holes except Inferno. If it's good enough for Sol: A History, it's good enough for me.
Finally, like I said, I'm not using everything in INFR1. The campaign isn't long enough for that

So I can pick out and junk the worst models.
