System Shock 2

I know all of you have you own opinions, but this game just kicks ass...

  • Already told you people too much!
I think I liked X2 because it's a different experience than Freespace 2 even though its graphics sucked anus,
I liked the background of stars
I liked the way you could trade
The music really gave me chills, like it was spooky or something, kind of like how space is.
I like the engine as far as the cockpit view, even tho it was poorly constructed

Hehe, I remember a part in the Unreal manual that went "mouse aiming, and why you should".

:D:D Man, thats old. At the time, I was still aiming using the cursor keys, and mouse aiming was totally new and wierd to me. Today, I can't imagine what it must be like to play with the cursor keys. Oh, wait, I can: Xbox.

On advisement I've been playing the hell out of Hostile waters, kicks arse and is quite challenging. Bought it for £2 as well so good on that point too. :)

I disagree about Silent Hill. I've played all of them, and in my opinion they've gotten better each game. The story in all of them is fantastic for one thing. Agreed about Hostile Waters though, that game rules.

And Turnsky, what do you mean Haegemonia's buggy on ATi cards? I've got a Radeon and haven't noticed any bugs at all yet.

You are correct, sir! It is the finest FPS (First Person Sneaker) ever made. Deus Ex and Thief 1, 2 (and indeed, it looks like 3) come close, but Dx swayed too far to the run and gun style of regular FPS games (especially in the later levels) whilst Thief sways too far to sneaking. Shock2 is the perfect blend of the two styles. Besides that, the music and ambient sounds and the AI barks just induce an atmosphere of paranoia and terror. :) All in all, one of the finest games ever made, IMHO.

See, I can agree with these points about X2. These are definitely things in its favor. :D

Games that I highly enjoyed or am replaying:

Jedi Knight Jedi Academy (dual lightsabers or lightsaber staff? YOU decide!) :)

Mechwarrior: Mercenaries (The New Battlefields website just came out with a map pack (called "New Battlefields Full Install") with new multiplayer missions and new terrain maps. You can find it here. Warning: It's a HUGE DL: 195Megs! But WELL worth it IMO.)

Thief I and II (If Thief III gets canned, I'm gonna be SOOOOO pissed...)

MechCommander Gold (I'm replaying this game after an entire year)

MechCommander 2 (Once I finish MC Gold, I'm gonna finish this)

And of course, Freespace 1 and 2 :)

I think Thief 3 is going to suffer from DX: Invisible War syndrome. Titles developed for consoles alongside PCs are seemingly lowered to the abilities of their lowest common denominator.

But DX:IW is by no means a bad game, it's just not a DX game. Thief3 will rock, I can feel it.

Holy f'ing crap. That is addictive :eek2: Awesome game! The text based story is also awesome. It apparently has multiple story lines as well :D

It also has an ST mod:

From EVN website

Starfleet Adventures: Explore the Star Trek universe in the time of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock as a Starfleet officer exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations, and boldly going where no one has gone before. This alpha version of the highly-anticipated TC is missing a large number of spöb, oütf, and bar descriptions, does not feature any storyline missions, and many of the "Ready Room" missions are still very buggy, but it's very playable with over 100+ ships and more than 1200+ systems and 1300+ worlds to explore. Requires Parts Two-Eight. Make sure you read the Read Me file before installing.
I AM GOD! AND I SHALL SMITE THEE!

Good games all (I removed the ones I haven't played from the list).

I can respect the fact that you like the game. Good for you. I won't sit back and let you recommend that someone else buy it without giving fair, shrill warning first. Its not fair to them. People shouldn't buy games that are this bad--especially if they live somewhere that doesn't let you return a bad game.

I'll say one thing in defense: it was pushed for the US and AU releases. That is the main reason it turned out the way it is now. As someone who traced the game from concept through development (inactively, as I'm not part of the DevNet) I know what I'm talking about, the players were nearing the point of burst, but the subsequent EU release was already bug-patch. Sometimes, the low quality isn't the producer's error, it's the distributer who forces a game out. Ultima IX being the utmost example.

Unlike with the remaining 90% of the games, X2 patches don't just fix bugs, each of them improves gameplay, AI, trading and game balance, and each of them weighs under 10 MB (which by today's means is nothing even for a 56ker, considering UT patches as a bright example of 30+ MB patches).

BTW, I'll thank you to not cast aspersions at me. Argue the game, not the player, thanks.

Duly noted, though I can't shake the feeling you played the game in it's 1.0 form. Ramming isn't common, I get collisions once in every twenty or so battles. The ships swerve around much more than they did pre-patch (which is even visible when upping to v1.1).

If people can read this debate, they can damn well get the patches. Besides, that's what Demos are for, the X2 playable Demo is already out on every damn magazine.

Re @ SadisticSid[/i]: all I can say is that the interface takes time to get accustomed to - you're free to either like it or not, but until someone shows a better interface for that game specifically, there's no point in slagging it. It was made to work, it works.

:sigh: Anyhow... :sigh:

mikhael[/b] - I'll have to wholeheartedly agree on SystemShock 2. Even after nearly five years, that game still has the shock effect that makes it good for nightlong plays ;) If nothing, it's infinitely replayable - I know it's linear, but changing "class" even slightly makes the game different every time.

FYI, the guys from the TTLG Forums are going to head up a MOD for, of course, Half Life 2 and re-create System Shock 2, on Earth, with a new storyline and more of System Shock 1 gameplay style. I recommended the engine myself to JediKorichken, since he was heading up The Shock Project. He thought it would be best, and he told me he would have picked it too... especially since the guys over there got to mess around with the HL2 editor...

A HL2 game mod so soon? All the more reason to save up for that game, it seems. That engine shows a lot of promise, hell, even old Half-Life was modable to the point of creating TCs like Counterstrike or mods like They Hunger.

I guess when my internet disconnected, and the "Post Message" page didn't load, I hit "post" again and it must have posted.

[color=66ff00]The sequals never gave me that genuine feeling of uneasyness and claustrophobia that came with the original. I still consider the first one to be better than possibly ever horror film I've ever seen, no horror movie has ever made me feel that sad, horrified, or gave me the heebie-jeebies on that level. It's simply awesome.

SS2 was pretty good for chill factor, at no point did I openly walk around in it, pretty much snuck around the entire time and the fact that you could hear enemies before you seen them.
Genuis. :)

Nah. I know the Thief3 AI guy. Crash gives it thumbs up so far, and from the screens he's shown me, I'm pretty well pleased with the look.

I played the game in the initial US release and with the first patch installed. The first patch didn't address the way the game looked, the way the game played, nor did it do anything to fix the horrible horrible story elements or to make looking at anything but the backgrounds bearable.

And what's with the horrible support? They seem to think that asking for a complete keyboard reference (as opposed to what's in the manual) is some sort of mortal sin. They were very, VERY rude in the email exchanges I had with them.
