This question is related to upcoming annoucement of... Mystery Project of course . We debated many times inside our team which style of nebulae is the best, and as we current use modiffied ED package, we'd like to know Your opinion.

Option 1:

Earth Defence Nebulae - Watsisname's Apophysis nebula pack.
Colorful, in extraordinary shapes and cool. This nebula pack released with ED dump are very detailed, has awesome quality but it's pretty different than backgrounds we know from both Freespace games. You may know it from Earth Defense, Venice Mirror or published screenshots from Mystery Project.

Option 2:

MediaVPs Nebulae - Lightspeed's Nebula
Trusted, well known and used in many community projects including FSPort, FSU, Blue Planet and numerous others.

Option 3:

Generated Skyboxes
Recently introduced to our modding community, nebula skyboxes are known from Dimensional Eclipse, Shadow Genesis and a few other projects. Result of generators are mostly dark, dull skyboxes similar in apperance to original FS1 backgrounds.

All of the above, nothing wrong with variety and different styles. The universe is a pretty kooky place after all.

My vote for option 1. Those have the most pop.

It took me awhile to come around to it, but I really like the generated skyboxes now. They look so much more subtle and realistic than the bright LS nebulae of the past, and, while the ED nebulae are kind of cool in a stylized sort of way, I still much prefer the skyboxes.

Incidentally, that third picture looks a lot like one of the nebulas in FS1.

But really, go with whatever fits the character of your campaign.  The ED nebulas look interesting, and AFAIK they aren't used in any released campaigns yet.

I always found the ED Nebula screenshots to be really eye catching and beautiful personally. And since ED bit the dust, I guess it would be good to see how they fare in a campaign. Might as well take them and use them.

They were. The same version of ED nebulae pack as in Mystery Project is present in TheHound's Venice Mirror. I helped a lot with this project and I shared a lot of never-used and forgotten ED stuff including unreleased nebulae bitmaps. If someone want to take a look closer, download VM .

There is still some never released ED stuff in FTP archives, including a lot of cool sounds. I will prepare proper and official assetdumps one day, just... I don't have time for everything right now. It's a lot of packing and checking.
