Humans are social animals and demand context - the enormous proliferation of romance novels makes that clear; they're essentially context porn. But your standard fare is pretty weak in that respect. Sturgeon's Law also applies.

I can actually answer this via people I know.

Basically, being involved in the industry, and especially being an actor, is about as close to one's conception of hell as you would care to experience. The necessity of multiple takes over long periods and other things that go into filming reduce an otherwise fun and interesting activity into an endurance saga that is frequently incredibly painful, despite the fact that the actors are often performing under the influence of mild to serious local anesthetics and even mild sedatives depending on what's being done for the video.

The reason porn looks awful most of the time is because it is awful for damn near everyone involved. When it looks better it's something of a minor miracle.
